Writing on the Last Day of May 2009

I'm writing on the last day of May 2009,
which is a partly cloudy day
something to give thanks for
because my air conditioning unit
isn't working
and clouds means a somewhat cooler day.

I'm writing on the last day of May 2009
and there are seven months to go in the year;
seven months left in a mixed year,
when my situations is looking both up and down,
sometimes the situation looks better,
sometimes the situation look worse,
and sometimes the fog is so think that I'm not sure.

I'm writing on the last day of May 2009,
and I think I've came to the end of this poem
because I can't think of anything else to write.

    The Hottest May on Record

This is the hottest May on record, so what happens? The air went out on Thursday and I can't get it fixed until at least Monday. I have an appointment scheduled for Monday between 8:00 AM and Noon.

I'm can only use the computer between Midnight and Noon, if I'm lucky, for the next few days. So what happened today, I slept until 4:00 AM. We're going to have to go to the bank sometime this morning, so that restricts today's time even more. Oh well, that's life.

I'm going to make some short blog entries today and tomorrow, which means any other writing I will do off the computer using my journal and long hand. There isn't a thing I can do about it, so I'm going to have to handle it. It isn't that I don't have other things to do today and tomorrow, it's just that I would have preferred to work on line. However, perhaps I'll reconsider my writing schedule and arrange it for night rather then during the day.

    Three Days left in May

There are three days left in May
and I can hear a chain saw buzzing away
    singing its song of destruction
as it chews into the stone pine tree
    in my front yard.

Gone is the tree closest to my garage
    cut down because its roots
were on a path of destruction
    focused on the foundation
    of my house.

There are two more pine and an olive tree
    left in my front yard,
I pray that they can stay
    for a while longer,
that their roots are not set on destroying
    the foundation of my house.

There are three day left in May,
    Friday,
    Saturday,
    Sunday,
and there are three trees left in my yard
    to give shade to me
and comfort to the nightingales and doves
    I hear every morning
when I go out to pick up the daily newspaper.

Sometimes writing your thoughts is difficult

Sometimes it's difficult to write because I sit in front of the computer and stare at the screen. I can also sit at the computer and stare out my living room window. Right now, there are clouds in the sky and a man on my roof.

The man on the roof, which sounds like a good title for a story, is cutting down a tree in the neighbors yard. He just finished cutting down a tree in my yard. These are stone pine trees he and his crew are removing. I had to have one of the trees in my yard removed because the roots were headed for the foundation of the house.

Having the tree taken out was expensive, not as expensive as it could have been, but it wasn't in the budget. That means a tight situation is going to be tighter for the next month or so. However, the cost would have been more if I had left the tree and the roots ruined the foundation of the house.

I still have two stone pine trees and an olive tree in the yard. I'm eventually going to have to have the other two pine trees taken out, but since the roots aren't headed for the house I can hold off on that for a while.

I'm going to have to reschedule Mom's appointment for her hearing aid fitting on Friday afternoon. I have to make a down payment and the down payment went to removing the tree. I'm also not going to be driving at night for sometime, since I can't afford the part to fix the taillight switch.

The only thing that won't have to wait is the fridge. I can get a used fridge for about $50.00, I have a fridge lined up and someone to haul it to the house. Not sure what I'm going to do with the old fridge, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

    Five months into 2009

We're five months into 2009, so far its been an interesting year. I'm worrying less then I did last year at this time. I'm griping less then I did last year at this time. I'm writing more then I did last year at this time.

I began 2009 driving a Kia Sephia and I'm still driving that car. At this moment, I'm waiting for a part to fix a switch which operates the taillights and the dash light. All right, if I asked my mechanic to order the part from the Kia dealer instead of looking for one at a junk yard I would be driving the car at night. However, ordering the parts from the dealer is expensive.

I receive my first Social Security check in my bank account this year. I'm still on a fixed income, but there is a little more income coming in with the Social Security check. I need to increase my income a little more, so I'm going to have to figure out how much I can earn and still draw Social Security.

I'm praying more then I did last year at this time. Everyday I place everything in God's hands, so I'm less worried. There are just some things in life that I have not control over, I've accepted that and I'm doing my best to take care of the stuff I have control over, which are my emotions. Everything else is in the Divine hands.

    A Writer's Word Count Goal

I heard somewhere, I'm not sure where, that a writer should write about 2,500 words a day. My daily word count goal is 2,975 words. For the past two or three months, I've found it difficult to make that count.

I have two options. First, I can take the word count goal back down to 2,500. Second, I can be more aggressive when it comes to that goal. By more aggressive, I mean I can't go to bed until I've achieved the goal or the midnight bells toll. Actually, the second option isn't too bad a choice.

I don't sleep well. When I go to bed I lay awake for several hours. Sitting at the computer writing is a better option then staring out the window waiting for the Metro helicopter to fly over the neighborhood.

I suspect the sleep issue is genetic. My mother doesn't sleep well, she says she lays awake almost all night. My grandmother didn't sleep well either; however, my grandmother would get up in the middle of the night and clean house. Myself, I would rather write or read then lay awake all night or clean house in the middle of the night.

  • I finished the newsletter last night

I stayed up until midnight, finished the newsletter and submitted it. This morning I got up at 5:30 AM Pacific Time. Perhaps that's why I feel like I'm pushing my way through a swamp when I write. Since, this is the last Monday in May and Memorial Day, I don't have to worry about deciding on a theme. I simply have to worry about writing and posting the blog entry.

Memorial Day brings back many memories. When I was a child, my grandparents drove from cemetery to cemetery and put flowers on the graves of veterans. My grandmother made crepe paper flowers to put on the graves. We spent the entire day driving through Kansas and Oklahoma placing flowers on graves.

  • Refrigerator shopping

    It's not a difficult process,
    you look at the ads
and decide which fridge to can afford
    at the regular price
    knowing that the money
    to pay for the refrigerator
won't arrive until after the sale is over.

    Price isn't the issue,
it's which one you can afford
    to pay for with cash;
    it isn't that your rich
    the problem is the reality
    of your credit
and an old fridge that runs 24/7,
    without mentioning any other problems
    with the fridge
    now sitting in the kitchen.

    Therefore,
    you say prayers 24/7
    and expect a miracle,
even if the only miracle you get
is that the old fridge continues to work
until you get a new one installed.

  • An interesting fossil find

In 1983, an amateur fossil hunter discovered an intriguing primate fossil at Messel pit near Darmstadt, Germany. Eventually the museum the Natural History Museum of Oslo University acquired the fossil.

This 47 million-year-old primate fossil is called Ida and for the past two year Dr Jørn Hurum and his team has studied the fossil. Darwinius masillae is the formal name for this fossil has a talus bone in her ankle and was in the process of forming her permanent teeth.

An article about this fossil titled Fossil Ida: extraordinary find is 'missing link' in human evolution was published on guardian.co.uk on Tuesday, May 19, 2009.

I always find articles like this intriguing because they give information about the history of life on earth. I'm not sure just yet how I'm going to incorporate the information, other then writing a poem to Ida, but the information still interest me whether I use it for anything else or not.

    Evening writing

    Evening writing seems more difficult
    as the days get longer,
instead of being in doors writing
I want to be out doors playing.

As I watch the stone pine limbs
    blowing in the evening breeze
I want to get in my car and drive somewhere,
go out of the city and wait for darkness
so that I can look at the stars
    and dream of other worlds
where the light pollution doesn't interfere
    with star gazing.

So I walk to the front door,
    pick up my car keys
    and head for the car,
    but then I remember
    I'm waiting for a part,
    I'm waiting for a switch
    to fix my tail lights;
I have turn signals and break lights
so I can drive my car during the daylight hours,
    but without taillights
    I can't drive at night.

    I'm stuck at home
    until the part comes in
    and the taillights are fixed.

I'm in a journal contest on writing.com called Follow the Leader: Journal Edition. I just finished responding to the Leading Entry for May 22, 2009, so I'm finally caught up on all the entries, including the bonus entry.

All my responses and my leading entry are in More Snow Melt. The last day of the contest is Monday, May 25. So my goal the next few days is just to make sure I respond to all the posted leading entries.

I'm weary right now, so I think instead of writing anything else for a little, I'll clean the cat litter boxes. I have two in the back yard drying now, when they are completely dry I'll finish that job.

    Thankful Thursday May 21, 2009

This is thankful Thursday and these are the things I am thankful for

    3. The fridge still freezes ice cubes
    4. I have a car that works and takes me where I want to go during the daylight hours
    5. My mother, who is 88, is still with me and she still enjoys doing housework
    6. I wrote a poem today about Thankful Thursday
    7. I am able to find things to be thankful for today
    8. I still have over half a tank of gas in the car
    9. The central air conditioner works properly and turns off when it is supposed to turn off
    10. Making a Thankful Thursday gratitude list improves my mood

I started to down load my e-mail into my outlook express box and it downloaded everything except about four or five messages. Then I go an error message which said it timed out. Now I have to start all over again with 832 messages and hope it doesn't time out again.

All right, this is my own fault. I didn't down load the messages yesterday. I have to download, at least once everyday or there are too many messages in the box for it to download easily or fast. It isn't that the messages are important, most of them are spam.

Out of this 832 messages, I'll be lucky if 32 of them are important. The rest is spam, which gets deleted almost immediately. ... I'm still having problems downloading my e-mail, therefore I'm going to post this and just download the e-mail into outlook without doing anything else online.

Writing and prayer changes my mood

There are two things in my life that changes my mood when do them. One of them is writing and the other is prayer. Both of these activities changes my mood and brightens my outlook on life. Prayer and writing, in that order, gives me something to look forward to each day.

Lately, I've been extremely worried about my mother. She is 88 years old and needs a hearing aid. I'm not sure how I'm going to get a hearing aid for her, but I have to. Having a hearing aid would make her life easier and mine as well. Mom doesn't always hear what is being said. She gets frustrated when she can't hear properly.

I think we all get frustrated when we can't hear what is being said. Hearing is an important sense to a human being because it gives us information about our environment. When we can't hear what is going on around us, we get worried and upset; there are other emotions that come into play when we can't hear properly.

I have an appointment Friday, to have Mom fitted for a hearing aid and make a down payment. I think I'm going to have to cancel the appointment for the hearing aid. We need a new fridge as much as Mom needs a hearing aid. The refrigerator is still running, actually it's running all the time 24/7 and I think it's loosing cold air. It still freezes and it still keeps food cold, but I don't know for how long.

My gut feeling tells me I'm going to have to get a new fridge by the end of May. I hate making choices between necessities, but that's how things are in the world today. We have to make choices between necessities and somebody looses out. I'm on the verge of tears.

I'm not sure what to do at this point, except pray. I know prayer works miracles, I've seen it happen in my life and in the lives of others. Therefore, I will continue to pray and look for the answer to my prayers, sometimes we have to look for the answers because they aren't always obvious to us.

A Partly Cloudy day in Las Vegas

It's a partly cloudy day in Las Vegas,
I have cloths drying on the line,
waiting for me to bring them inside.

I have another load in the washer
waiting for me to hang them
on my hexagon outdoor cloths dryer.

    I'm getting more exercise
since the electric dryer broke down,
now I have to put the wet cloths in a basket
and carry them outside to dry.

My only problem now is the weather
will the clouds bring rain today
or can I get another load of laundry
    washed and dried
    before the sunset today.

    I went shopping today

Jamál (Beauty), 1 ‘Azamat (Grandeur), 166 BE – Sunday, May 17, 2009 about 4:35 PM Pacific Time

I went shopping today. This morning about 9:00 AM, my mother and I went to The Home Depot and then to Food 4 Less. At The Home Depot we bought a heavy duty mop with a spaghetti mop head. The mop head was made of cotton, which means it will be easy to clean when it needs cleaning. I also bought two extra mop heads because I when I clean the mop head, it takes it a while to dry. I bought a new mop bucket a few days ago and decided I need a new mop to go with the bucket.

While I was at The Home Depot, I looked at the refractors. I found one that I liked and it didn't have an ice maker. I don't care for refractors with ice makers. I prefer to make my ice the old fashion way. After The Home Depot we went to Food 4 Less to get some bleach and other miscellaneous items. I can't mop a floor without bleach, my grandmother always used bleach when she mopped her kitchen and bathroom floors.

Thinking about this whole shopping experience with the new mop and mop bucket, I realized that I enjoy shopping. I also think that mopping the floor would make a good theme for a poem, especially using my new mop the first time. I am actually looking forward to mopping the floor with my new mop.

I wonder how a mop feels the first time someone uses it on a floor. That would make a good writing theme of some type. I am not sure how I am going to use it right now, but I will come up with something.

    I’m waiting for a part

I spent most of the day yesterday at the mechanics. The problem with my taillight and dash lights is a switch, so I'm waiting for a part to get the lights fixed. I have brake lights and turn signals, so I can drive in the day time, but I can't drive at night. I'm going to have to wait until the part comes in and the car is fixed before I can drive after dark.

All right, I don't drive a lot after dark, so normally this isn't a problem. Anything I have to do after dark is going to have to wait or I'm going to have to take a bus or call Paratransit. I'm not going anyplace after dark if I can't find another way home then the bus or Paratransit.

Maybe I can write a poem or story about this experience. I'm a writer and can use my personal experiences in poems or stories. Most writers, even if they don't admit it use some of their personal experiences in their work.

  • Going Green

I'm going green, I bought an outdoor cloths dryer. It's the hexagon type of cloths line that turn when so you don't have to walk around it when you hang the cloths out to dry. All right, I'll have to admit that I didn't intend to go green when it came to my cloths dryer. However, the electric dry broke down and the outdoor cloths dryer was less expensive then an electric cloths dryer. Even with the 50 lbs. of cement to I needed to put it up, it was less expensive then an electric cloths dryer.

The outdoor cloths dryer went up yesterday and I hung cloths on it this morning. I still have an electric washer for washing the cloths, but I'm hanging them outside to dry. Hanging cloths outside will work find this summer, but winter may be a bit of a problem. Several of the neighbors have wood burning fireplaces, which they use in the wintertime. I'll have to be really careful about hanging cloths outside when the neighbors have the fireplaces going. Wood smoke settles in the cloths and when you wear them the odor of smoke is apparent. I'm not sure at present, but I may have to invest in an electric dryer this winter.

Anyway, I'm going green; not because I wanted to but because of the economic situation. It's less expensive to dry cloths on a line then buy an electric dryer. It's less expensive to wash cloths at home and dry them on the line then drive to a laundromat. Sometimes, going green is economically better then an expensive electric dryer.

    Gathering Words

I receive a daily meditation in my yahoo.com mail box called Elder's Meditation of the Day. The meditation for Monday, May 11, 2009 is "[The Old People] would gather words as they walked a sacred path across the Earth, leaving nothinig behind but prayers and offerings."
    ---- Cleone Thunder, NORTHERN ARAPAHOE

Each day we live we walk a sacred path on Earth because we touch the lives of other people. As we walk, we to look at the world around us. Since the planet itself is in constant motion, the world in which we live is always in motion, either visible or invisibly.

Nothing on this planet is still, not even the words we speak or the thoughts we think. As we walk the path of our lives we gather words and feelings, many times we don't notice the words and feelings we gather. Therefore, sometimes we acquire words and feelings which are positive and don't assist us or others on the journey.

Instead of gathering words and feelings willy nilly without noticing whether they are positive or negative, we should begin to notice the feelings and thoughts moving through our lives. We need to gather the good, the positive and spread them around to our fellow human beings. Once we begin to notice our thoughts and feelings, we will realize the interconnectedness that exist in the world around us.

May you gather words in your journey that will carry you through the day and make you and someone else happy.

    My mother is 88

My mother is 88, she was born on a farm in Oklahoma on March 19, 1921. She lived in Las Vegas during World War II, when my father was stationed at the Air force Base. My father was in the Army Air Corp. At that time, my mother worked as a maid at the County Hospital.

My mother has lived a long time, when she was born there were very few cars on the road. The doctor who delivered her, he came to the farm, drove a car. My grandfather had one of the first gas-powered tractors, which came on the market. My grandfather always liked to have the newest technology and he bought my grandmother everything she wanted or needed.

My mother is 88 years old. She has lived to see many first and she has acquired a great deal of wisdom.

  • An interesting Mothers' Day

It's been a busy and interesting Mothers' Day. This morning I took my mother to the urgent care because of a rash or something on her leg. We arrived at the urgent care about 8:15 AM and saw the doctor almost immediately. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic pill and said to get an over-the-counter antibiotic cream. We left the urgent care about 9:00 AM and came home.

Mom hadn't put her lower plate in her mouth after brushing her teeth and we were going out to eat. My brother, the one that lives in Colorado, called while we were home. Mom and I talked to him and his wife for while. After they hung up, we went out to eat breakfast because the pharmacy Mom picks up her meds at doesn't open until 10:00 AM on Sunday.

After we ate, we came back home because I thought it would take them an hour or so the fill the waiting prescriptions. While we were waiting for leave, my sister called to wish Mom a Happy Mothers' Day. After my sister hung up, we went to get the prescription and cream, then we came home.

Sunday was another busy day after three busy and stressful days. I don't think today was very stressful, with the exception of driving in weekend traffic. The traffic wasn't too bad for a Sunday holiday.

    It's Saturday morning

It's Saturday morning, I can hear the garbage trucks moving through the neighborhood. Today is recyclable day as well as trash pick up day. I got three recyclable bins out this morning, but no trashcans. I need to get a new plastic trashcan that I can roll out to the curb because carrying the aluminum trashcans is becoming difficult.

It's Saturday morning and I'm behind on writing again. I'll get caught up of course, but I may have to stay up all night. I know what gets me behind, lack of planning. The lack of planning comes in when I have to leave the house for three or four hours. Today I have to pick up meds for myself and for my mother at two different stores. I also have to get cement, a mop bucket and fabric softener.

I bought an outdoor cloths dryer, but I need to have cement for the post hole and the cement is on sale until May 13, so I have to get it today. I don't have a real mop bucket, which would help with mopping the floors. I'm going to have to plan my shopping and bill paying trips better from now on because spending most of the day driving all across Las Vegas is just too time consuming.

I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night

I'm tired! I'm weary and I can't go to bed until I've caught up on some of the entries I didn't make yesterday or the day before. All right, I have no excuse for not making any entries on Wednesday, May 6. Actually, I'm not really sure why I didn't make any entries on the 6th. I know why I didn't make entries on Thursday, May 7.

On Thursday, I had the rest of my teeth extracted and my bottom plate put into my mouth. I came home, took a pain pill and went to bed. I went to bed extremely early because of the pain pill. It's a prescription pain pill and it knocked me out. Thursday I wasn't capable of operating any type of machinery, heavy or otherwise.

I did make some entries in my pen and paper journal, but I haven't reread them yet to see if they make any sense. I did a Writing My Spiritual Journey entry, which I will copy to that journal either today or tomorrow. I also wrote a short poem (I hope that makes sense) and did a Thankful Thursday list. It doesn't matter if the Writing My Spiritual Journey and Thankful Thursday entries make any sense because I'm going to copy them into the proper journals any. I'll add a note to each entry about the circumstances under which they were written.

I'm not going to go into the details of yesterday in this blog entry. I have more writing to catch up and I've already posted an entry in More Snow Melt. If you want to read that entry go right ahead. The title is be careful what you wish for.

I still don't think I'm feeling 100% and my ulcer seems to want to act up. I guess I ought to go open another can of applesauce, because that's all I'm going to be eating for the next few days. My gums are in the process of healing and I can't eat anything that isn't soft. I think all we have in the house is unsweetened applesauce and I don't think I like unsweetened applesauce. I'll add some yogurt to the next can I open and see how I like that; I'll be glad when my gums heal.

Can a white hole exist in the universe?

I just encountered this item recently while reading one of the responses to my leading journal entry in Follow the Leader Journal contest on writing.com. Naturally, I had to do an Internet search to find out about this phenomena. Anyway, white holes have something to do with the theory of General Relativity, which is a mathematics-based theory.

In mathematics, white holes appear in the space-time equation around black holes when the mass of the star, which created the black hole is left out. At least, that is how I understand the explanation give at What is a white hole?.

My concern now is not whether a white hole exists in the real universe. My concern is how do I use a white hole in my writing? Is a white hole something I can put in a short story or a poem? This is something I am going to have to consider in my meditation. After all, what use is knowledge if you cannot use it?

  • I Decided on my Leading entry for the journaling contest

I composed and posted the entry last night after 9:00 PM here, which is about 12:00 midnight writing.com time. The title of the post is It's a Dangerous and Powerful Universe and I posted it in More Snow Melt.

The post is about rogue black holes in the halo of the Milky Way galaxy. I got the idea after reading the article Rogue black holes may roam the Milky Way. The Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysics News released this Spaceflight Now article. The article is very educational and informative; it explains the theory concerning rogue black holes clearly.

  • I’m Playing Follow the Leader again

I am participating in the Follow the Leader Journal contest on writing.com again. This is the first time in 2009 that I have participated in this contest; however, I participated in it in both 2007 and 2008. The name of the blog I am using this year is More Snow Melt.

I am scheduled to make the leading entry on Tuesday, May 5, and I have no idea what to write about. I'll know before tomorrow, of course, but right now I am just contemplating ideas. As usual, nothing I come up with seems right. I think I need to do some free writing to see what subjects I can find.

Perhaps I will write about getting my dining room back or the soda machine in my garage. Both of those subjects have potential, especially when it comes to a poem or short story.

    The First Saturday in May

It's the first Saturday in May 2009. Mothers' Day is on May 10, which is next Sunday. I think my Mom and I are going to Chili's to have one of their deserts. Mothers' Day is a week away, so it's a bit early to decide for sure.

One of my brothers called yesterday to make sure he had the right address to send a Mothers' Day card. Mom likes to receive cards through the mail and then put the cards in a scrapbook. Mom also likes to receive flowers; however, she enjoys the cards more because she can look at the cards over and over again.

I remember growing up, we took Mom breakfast in bed one Mothers' Day. She enjoyed it at the time, but now that she is 88 she enjoys the cards more then anything else. Mom also like poetry. Perhaps I'll write a Mothers' Day poem. Right now, I'm just brainstorming Mothers' Day ideas. I'd like to do something more then simply go out to eat on Mothers' Day, so a poem would make the day memorable.

    Mothers' Day
    is your day

All right, probably not the best start in the world. Perhaps I just too tired right now to think of anything else. I know Mom wants a red dress, the problem is finding one mall enough to fit her. Every dress she has needs taking up because she hasn't gained the weight back she lost in the hospital in 2007. The last time she went to the doctor she weighted about 101 lbs. and she wants to gain more. So take her out to Chili's for their desert and make her some mashed potatoes with gravy here at home.

Those are my only ideas today. I'll pray about this when I go to bed tonight and see what I come up with in the morning.
