Writing about Fog in Las Vegas

It's a foggy day in Las Vegas. The fog isn't as thick as pea soup, but it's thick enough to hide items in a distance. Come to think of it, I've never see fog as thick a pea soup. I've seen and driven in thick fog when I was younger, but none of it ever reminded me of pea soup or any other kind of food.

I've never like driving or walking in fog. Today I'm going to have to walk in it. At least, I will if it hasn't cleared by the time I get up nerve enough to go out in it. Today I have to go to both Walgreens and Wal-Mart on opposite ends of Charleston. I'm picking up Mom's prescription at one and my prescription at another. While I'm out I'm going to have to get some cat food and maybe some new shoes.

I have to have new shoes, my old shoes are getting to the point where I can't wear them any more. Their soles are worn and I'm going to have to throw them away. I'll just have to extend my trip and stop at a factory outlet store to see if I can buy some inexpensive walking shoes. Maybe I'll try at Wal-Mart while I'm there.

I didn't know my shoes were getting bad until I walked in the rain a couple of days ago. The water seeped in through the soles. So now I need to get a pair of new shoes so that my feet stay dry. I don't like my feet to get wet when I'm wearing shoes. Perhaps if I wait about sixty minutes or so, the fog will clear.

    The First Thanksgiving Feast

The first thanksgiving feast didn't have turkey or pie. The Plymouth colonist and the Wampanoag Indians ate venison and wild fowl (all right, maybe one of those wild birds was a turkey, but not as big as those we eat today). Another thing they didn't have was forks, instead they ate with knives, spoons, their hands and cloth napkins (which they used to pick up the food and to wipe their mouths).

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival and the reason for harvest festivals is to express gratitude and give thanks. The participants in harvest festivals give thanks for the abundance of the Earth, for the crop and the abundance of wild life, which provides food all year around.

In our modern society, we sometimes forget to express our thanks for the abundance of the ground. In cities, we go to the store and buy our produce and meat. However, we need to remember that these things come from farmers who plant crops and raise animals for us to eat. Even if we don't eat meat, we need to express our thanks to the farmers who grow the vegetables.

Today is a day to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped us survive the past 12 months. So say "Thank You" to someone who has helped you survive in this modern society. For information about Thanksgiving, see The History of Thanksgiving.

Writing on a Cloudy Autumn Day

It finally feels like autumn in Las Vegas. The sky was cloudy all day and the temperature cool. The oak trees are starting to turn yellow all though I don't think we've had a freeze yet. Autumn has arrive in Las Vegas and it's almost winter.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, which makes this weather welcome. It hasn't been so cold that the central air is running all the time. I like this type of weather around Thanksgiving because it isn't so cold that we need to bundle up. All that is need is just a light sweater or jacket to keep warm, so when we go out on Thursday I'm going to wear a long sleeved blouse and carry a light jacket.

The autumn clouds are beautiful even if it doesn't rain. I'm not sure, but I think there might be a light dusting of snow on Mount Charleston. That would be nice, it doesn't seem like autumn in Las Vegas without a little bit of snow on Mount Charleston. I'll have to take a look tomorrow while I'm waiting for the bus to bring me home and double check on the snow. Even if there isn't snow on the Mountain, the air feels like autumn, which means there will be snow up there soon.

    Writing about Bloggers' Block

I am apparently having an attack of bloggers block. I cannot think of anything to write about. Normally I would not make a blog entry if I could not think of anything to write about. However, I am not going to let a momentary attack of bloggers block stop me from writing.

This is my own fault of course. I did not approach this entry properly. I simply logged onto the website and started to write without any idea to discuss. That is not the best way to approach a blog entry, especially for a writer. I have consider making a list of themes and subjects, but just never got around to it. Therefore, this attack of bloggers block should not be surprising.

I could also be tired, which could contribute to the condition. I could write about the pain in my right knee, but I think I have over did that subject for a while. I am still attempting to figure out how to describe the pain. Actually, the pain in my knee is a lot like the pain of bloggers block. It is continuous and burning. Then as it subsides, the knee stiffens and I walk with a limp.

Maybe I should talk to the doctor about it. About the knee not bloggers block. I must admit that I can apply the pain to my knee to other themes beside bloggers block. I think I wrote a love poem using the pain in my knee. True it was a bitter lover poem, but a love poem none-the-less. Maybe I will write a love poem using bloggers block.

Writing about the next 19 Days

    Jamál (Beauty), 1 Qawl (Speech), 165 B.E. – Sunday, November 23, 2008 about 2:15 PM Pacific Time

I'm entered in two journaling contests on writing.com, which start in the next couple of weeks. The first is "Follow the Leader: Journal Edition", beginning on Monday, November 24 and running through Sunday, December 14. My leading journal entry is on Wednesday, December 10.

The second contest is "31-Day Journal Challenge" starting on Monday, December 1 and running through Friday, December 31. In this contest, I have 24-hours to respond to the challenge of the day. In both of these contests, I will post to Snow Melt my writing.com blog.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 27, and Pearl Harbor Day is Sunday, December 7. On Tuesday, December 2, my Mother has a dental appointment to get a new set of dentures and on Tuesday, December 9, I have a dental appointment. The dentist is going to pull my teeth and put in a set of dentures. Therefore, I ought to have plenty to write about in this 19-day period.

Writing on Thursday November 20, 2008

Mom has a dental appointment this morning at 11:00 AM and since her Paratransit pass says she has a helper going with her, I'm taking off work today. I think from now on we're going to make the appointments in the afternoon rather then in the morning. All though, since I take the Paratransit to work and home, that may be a problem in getting Mom to her appointments on time.

The past few days the bus picking me up at work and taking me home was late to pick me up. Normally I don't mind since I have a book to read and a pen and paper journal for writing thoughts. However, since I don't have a car we have to take either Paratransit or the regular CAT bus everywhere. This means that if I make doctors appointments on the same afternoon as I work mornings, one late bus will throw the entire schedule off. Oh well, I'll just have to deal with it.

I really need to find something else to write about besides doctors' appointments and Paratransit rides. I think my entries are getting a bit boring. Therefore, I'll move on to my e-mail which I haven't checked in a couple of days. I'll have to check them today because I think I have some e-mails to answer and people to contact.

After going to the store Tuesday, I spent the rest of the day updating my virus protection. Yesterday, when I came home I made some post and went to bed early. For once I didn't get up early so this morning I'm feeling rested. I feel much better this morning then I have in a long time. Maybe what I need was just a little more sleep.

Reading while waiting for the bus

I'm taking the Paratransit bus to work and home again. I have a lot of time to wait for the bus, which has been late everyday this week. The book I'm reading while waiting for the bus is In the Palm of Your Hand by Steve Kowit. This is a portable workshop for poets and gives exercises in each chapter about writing poems.

I have a pen and paper journal with me so that I can answer the question in the chapters or work on the exercises. I also put any ideas or poems I come up with in the journal. I have a lot of time on my hands waiting for the bus. Even reading and writing in a journal, waiting for a bus is tiresome. However, when I do get a car I will continue to take the bus to and from work.

True waiting for a bus takes time, but reading and writing poetry does help the waiting time pass quickly. I do get a lot less done at home or on line, but I think once I get the routine down then I will get more done. I don't sleep well anyway, so I can always get up and do house work or get on line rather then lay in bed and stare out the window or at the ceiling.

    Writing when I’m weary

I'm weary tonight. I'm stressed tonight. Maybe I'm weary because I'm stressed.

It's a beautiful autumn day in Las Vegas. The leaves haven't begun to change yet and it feels like spring, but it's autumn. Today the temperatures got into the 80s.

I can write better in the morning then in the afternoon or the evening. Perhaps I'm going to have to start getting up at 12:00 midnight to make blog entries. I catch a Paratransit bus to work between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Getting up at 4:00 doesn't give me a lot of time to make blog entries.

Tomorrow I'm going to have to go to the bank and then the grocery store after I get off work. I'm going to come home first and then take the regular CAT bus to do the errands. It might be easier to go to the bank from work, but it's too late to rearrange tomorrow's schedule. I got a check through the mail today and I have to go cash it tomorrow.

I think I'll finish the writing I have to do tonight and then get off line and go to bed early. The only other thing I have to do tonight is a couple of reviews on writing.com. They have to be done tonight, so I think that is the next thing I will do.

    Writing my To Do List

I finally broke down and made a "To Do List" or as close to one as I can come. It appears organized, all though I think I could do better on the organization part of it. I listed the items as they came to me rather then as they occur during the day. It has everything I intend to do on it, but have not prioritized the list. Maybe that should be my next objective. I think I will do that after the New Year and just keep this year's list going the way I started it.

I scheduled my Paratransit rides to work for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I still have to schedule the rides for Thursday and Friday, but I cannot do that until Monday and Tuesday after I get off work.

    I miss my car!

Mom and I are going to have to go pick up food and stuff next week. We'll use the Paratransit, but I only have enough change in my purse for one regular bus ride for each of us. My paycheck will arrive on Friday, so I think that this week we will have pasta, rice or beans. We still have some canned meat and meat in the freezer, so I think that tomorrow we will have pasta with one of those.

I probably should be worried, but oddly enough, I am not. Maybe I should put "Be Worried" down on my "To Do List". The list can contain 19 items each day, not that I have time to do all that, but I have put the times for the Paratransit pick up from home and work on the list. I have to print Monday's list off before I turn the computer off tonight.

I no longer have a working car

I think I've posted in this blog before about my car. It's sitting in my driveway not working. I have put over $200.00 into it this year and I can't afford to put anymore. I don't think I could afford to put that much in it, but I did. Anyway, I have decided to take all my stuff out of the car and donate it to a worthy cause.

This means that we will be without a car for sometime to come. I'm going to have to find a car that I can afford to buy without high payments, which means I'm going to be without a car for a long time. This of course, does save on gas since I won't have a car I won't have to buy gas. All right, my sense of humor is borderline. I have a good excuse though, I have been out socially since the car went out last month. Perhaps longer then that since the price of gas prevented us (my mother and myself) from going a lot of places we used to go.

As soon as I get the car cleaned out and remember where I filed the title (all right so my filing system is creative) I will call one of the groups that takes donations and ask them to come get the car. I have one more tow on my AAA and I'm not going to use any more towes for this car. The problem is the water pump and the timing belt. If the engine isn't damaged then it may be fixable. If the engine is damaged who know. It's a four cylinder engine so who know whether it worth it or not.

One thing about not having the car fixed, I'll have a lot more time to write and work on line. I suppose every situation has its good and bad points. Fortunately, both my mother and I are qualified for Paratransit. The people I work for will pay for my ride to work., so that does help a bit.

    Junk mail can be comforting

Normally I mass delete all the e-mails in my junk mail box, but this morning I decided to take a look at the subject lines. While I was looking at the subject lines I look at the dates as well. That is when I realized that junk mail can be comforting. The dates on the first fifty or so messages in my junk mail box show 2038 or 2037 dates.

What is so comforting about those dates? Well according to some sources, the world will end on December 12, 2012. However, according to the dates in my junk mail box the world will continue to exist in 2037 and 2038 or at least e-mails will be sent into the past. OK, so I have a rather odd sense of humor.

Life gets tedious without a sense of humor. If person can't have fun with the messages in his or her junk mail box then that person needs a vacation. I will admit that I need a vacation: unfortunately, I can't afford a vacation. Therefore, I'm going to do the next best thing, I'm going to have fun with the messages in my junk mail box.

I need an idea to write about

I'm one of the editors of the fantasy newsletter on writing.com. I just completed the November edition I'm responsible for and now I need an idea for the December edition. Normally I have all sorts of ideas, but this time I seem to be fresh out.

The edition I just finished concerned the end of the world. I used the suggestion that December 21, 2012 will be the end of the world. December 21, 2012 is the final date in the 13-year Mayan Long Count Calendar. This date refers to the end of a cycle and not the end of the world, unless of course we panic when winter solstice 2012 arrives. Maybe the entire human race should call in well to work that day and just stay home.

The only thing I can come up with at this moment is Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. The questions a writer asked when creating the plot to a short story or novel. My problem is that they don't excite me. I guess they just don't stick the same chords as the end of the world. I need to have the newsletter completed by December 8. However, I need to come up with an idea so that I can look for stories on writing.com to feature in the newsletter.

  • Giving Thanks in November

Thanksgiving is approaching or as my nephew calls it Turkey Day. He calls it this because one of his aunts (not me) bakes a turkey every year. For the past three or four years, I have Microwaved a turkey on either Thanksgiving or Christmas. I am not going to do that this year, because I am tired of Microwaved turkey. I am also tired of carving the turkey before I cook it because the turkey is too big for the Microwave Oven. (We were given the turkeys, so I had no choice about the size.)

One thing I am going to do this year is make a list of Thanksgiving Gratitudes. I am not sure what is going to be on the list yet. There are a lot of things I have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, too many things to put on a single day's gratitude list and too many things to list in a single blog entry.

In these difficult times it is often hard to find things for which to give thanks. However, it is important to give thanks during times of crises and difficulties. Perhaps it is more important to give thanks during hard times then during times of ease and comfort. When life is not difficult and we are not confronting hard times, we often do not see the little things and blessing we have in our lives. In difficult times, we need to see the blessings and gratitudes to keep from becoming discouraged.

All though we should give thanks everyday we live. Having one month to give thanks in is better then not giving thanks at all.

Writing My To Do List for the remainder of November

I think best way for me to get anything accomplished is to write a "To Do List". I've tried a schedule and it doesn't work for me. The nearest thing I'm going to come to a schedule is to keep track of how long it takes me to make a journal or blog entry.
    1. Hold onto my morning optimism, because that is the only way I can get anything accomplished.
    2. Complete next week's edition of the writing.com Fantasy Newsletter by Sunday, November 9 at 9:00 PM Pacific Time.
    3. Complete NaNoWriMo novel by November 30.
    4. Extend my writing.com upgraded membership for three months by November 15. This will take me to March 15, when I plan to purchase a one-year premium membership.
    5. Make a daily "To Do List" and check off everything that I accomplish on the list.
    6. Don't "kick myself" because I don't achieve everything on my daily "To Do List". I have a tendency to over estimate what I can accomplish in a 24-hour period. If I accomplish between 1/4 and 1/2 of the things on the list I'm doing good.
    7. Say a prayer of gratitude every evening for everything I have accomplished that day.
    8. Do not begin my day without say a prayer of protection.
    9. Make a grocery list before going to the grocery store.
    10. Buy a 30-day bus pass as soon as my Paratransit ID arrives.

Writing on a chilly autumn morning

It's chilly this morning and I expect mornings to be chill for about the next four months. I turned the heat on yesterday, so the house is a bit warmer then yesterday morning. It's nice to write on chilly mornings, because my hands are warmer when I keep them moving across the keyboard.

I'm behind on my NaNoWriMo novel, but I should catch up on it this weekend. This week I have a four-day holiday. The Clark County School District is taking off Monday, November 10, and Tuesday, November 11, because of the holiday. This is nice, because it gives me a chance to catch up on my NaNoWriMo novel.

Saturday and Sunday I'm working on writing.com's fantasy newsletter. However, I should have that completed by Sunday, November 9, at the latest. I plan to have it completed and submitted by midnight Saturday.

It's Thursday and I'm behind on everything

It's Thursday NaNoWriMo Day 6. I am behind on everything. I'm tired. I'm frustrated. My car is back in my driveway not running, but it can't set at the mechinics any longer. At this moment, I'm downloading two or three days of e-mail, most of which is junk.

I spent Tuesday, November 4, working the election polls. I spent Wednesday, November 5, riding the bus across town. Today I spent most of the afternoon on the bus. I had to pick up Mom's meds after work. I'm tired and I'm sleepy. Needless to say I haven't gotten a lot of writing done.

I going to stop complaining because it does no good. I complain about the pain in my knee and it gets worse. I've complained about walking so far to work and back, it doesn't do any good because I usually end up walking farther. I complain about not having any money and I less money then I did before I started complaining. Complaining just makes the situation worse.

I think I'll post this entry and get on with something else. I know there is something I'm forgetting to do. I'll remember what it is when I'm half asleep and wake up to do it.

    NaNoWriMo Day 3

I found out something today. It's easy to make your NaNoWriMo daily word count goal when you don't leave the house. When all you have to do is stay home and write it's easy to write 1,667 words. However, it isn't so easy when you have to go to work.

Yesterday, Day 2, I wrote 1,816 words. I finished the prologue and begin chapter 1. Today I haven't written a word. This morning before I went to work, I went to the mortgage website and set-up the account (again) to make the house payment online. I had to do this because on November 1, I forgot the answers to the security questions.

Of course, Saturday seemed like a rather weird day. All day long I felt out of place. I don't know why because I was home all day, unlike Friday, when I spent the day riding CAT buses from one side of town to the other. Any way, I ended up today taking care of stuff I should have gotten done over the weekend.

Before I go to bed tonight, I have to fix me something to take with me tomorrow to eat. I'm not sure what I'm going to call the dish I've started. Right now, I have ground beef and a can of mushroom soup in the slow cooker. When the ground beef is done, I think I'll add some rice or pasta.

    NaNoWriMo Day 2

My final word count for Day 1 of NaNoWriMo is 1,737, which exceeds my word count goal of 1,667. I'm still working on the novel's prologue and I've set the goal for the prologue to 2,000 words. Today I will finish the prologue and then move to chapter 1.

The working title of this year's NaNoWriMo novel is The Paradox Stone (and no it isn't about a stone too heavy for God to lift). The prologue consists of background information given in the form of journal extracts from the personal journal of one of my protagonist ancestors.

I had a title for the first chapter, but I've decided to change the title. I also changed the title of the prologue before I began writing it and the novel. Originally, the novel's title was Project Power Crystal, but I decided that just wasn't eye catching enough. In addition, it didn't really go along with some of the occurrences in the novel.

I'm a bit worried that the only action in the prologue is described in journal entries. However, I couldn't think of any other way give the information necessary for the reader to know before getting into the novel. The ancestors of my protagonist were the first to use the stone, so I decided to use journal entries from one of those using the stone.

    NaNoWriMo Day 1

I started and so far I have approximately 979 words. Today's word count goal is 1,667. For some reason I can't seem to type straight through without taking breaks. I'm not sure why, but this year I'm going to attempt to work through my perceived limitations. Today I'm working on the prologue to the novel, those little things that need to be stated first.

After fretting over how I should approach the Prologue, I decided to do a series of journal extracts using a series of entries written by the main character's ancestor. I still have to log into the NaNoWriMo website and post a synopsis of the novel and an extract. If I don't get to the first chapter today then the extract will be from the prologue until I get to chapter one.

I'm going to attempt to post my progress everyday. All though Tuesday, November 4 may be a bit of a problem because I'm working the election polls that day. I have to be at my post at 6:00 AM until 7:00 PM. That's a very long day, but I'm not going to miss the chance to work on my novel. I'm taking a notebook with me to work in long hand. While I may not get 1,667 words written that day, I will get something written. That's the idea, just write every day even if you have to do it in a pen and paper journal.
