Three Day Until October

Three days left in September.
Three months left in the year.
Is there anything to fear?

The answer to that question is probably yes, but since I don't know what it is I'm not going to worry about it. As far as I know, I got everything mailed for renewal of my SNAP card last week. I haven't heard anything from my case worker yet so I'm going to go ahead with more mundane things such as making coffee and mopping floors.

October is going to be a busy writing month because I'm planning my NaNoWriMo novel. I have two ideas for this years novel and I have to pick one before the end of September. The working title for one of the novel's is The Dragon Wars and the other is The Search of Intelligent Life. I had planned to base the novel on a short story I wrote called The search for Intelligent Life, but last week I wrote Winged Vengeance which is the first story in a fantasy series about Dragon Wars.

This week I plan to write another short story about the Dragon Wars series. I also have to go back and reread The Search for Intelligent Life. Since my printer is working now (at least I think it's working) I can print of the science fiction story to start the rewrite on it. Once I look at a hard copy then I will be able to determine what my NaNoWriMo novel is about. Check back next Saturday or Sunday for more on this subject.

What is a good genre for an April Fools Day story?

Today is April 1, April Fools’ Day, and I have been wondering what genre is good for an April Fools’ Day story. Comedy is the first genre that comes to mind, but it is not the only one to use. Science Fiction, fantasy, and romance would make good genres as well.

I thank romance would make a good genre for an April Fools’ Day story, but then I write bitter love poems; so that may explain the reason I would pick romance for this type of story. In fact, I did write an April Fools’ Story that was also a romance. The story is still on my hard drive; I will have to find it and post it in my writing.com port.

I have two April Fools Day stories to write today. One is a flash fiction, with a deadline of midnight Eastern Time. The other is a short story (1,000 words or less) and its deadline is April 2 at noon Eastern Time. Each of the stories has a prompt because they are entries in two contests on writing.com. I think one of the stories will be a romance, but the other will be either fantasy or science fiction.

My Birthday presents

My brother sent me a Border’s gift card for my birthday. I went to the bookstore on my birthday and bought two books. One was a science fiction book and the other fantasy.

On December 24, I bought The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide by Douglas Adams. This book contains a story and five novels. The fantasy book is The Dragon Book edited by Jack Dann and Gardner Dozois, which contains nineteen short stories about dragons. I decided to read The Dragon Book first. After I finish the fantasy book, I will read the science fiction.

Life’s Little Mysteries

A writer's daily life is full of little mysteries that appear to have no solution. I have about three mysteries that I could use as the basis to a fantasy or science fiction story. I don't think these puzzles would make good novels or short stories, but they would make good flash fiction stories. These mysteries are

1. What happened to all my spoons? I still have several full sets of knives and forks, but only half-a-dozen mismatched spoons. The logical explanation, of course, we inadvertently threw away, but if that was the case then why do we still have the knives and forks to the sets.
2. What happened to all my socks? I have about a dozen mismatched pairs of socks, which I can't wear any place except at home. The logical explanations are lost in the washing machine, in the wrong dresser drawer or under a piece of furniture, but those explanations raise other questions.
3. Why can't I get all the laundry done in one day? My mother and myself are the only two people in this house, but we have to do laundry every day to stay even with the never ending pile. My grandmother did laundry for seven people once a week and we had enough cloths to last us all seven days, while changing cloths several times a day. However, if I let the laundry go a single day then it takes me a week to catch up.

These are only a few of the little mysteries I've noticed the past year or so. Maybe now that I'm 62 they just seem more puzzling. I don't know what the explanations to these mysteries are, I just know that I would like them solved. Therefore, I'm going to write a flash fiction story about each one. The stories may not solve the mystery, but at least I'm using the mysteries creatively and constructively.

The Milky Way Family of Galaxies

I'm working on a novel; all right, I'm working on more then one novel. However, the one I'm focusing on is almost finished. The problem is that I got stuck on the last chapter of the novel. I decided to reread the chapters I've finished to solve the problem of completing the last chapter.

As a result, of rereading the first three chapters, I noticed several problems. One of the problems had to do with the Milky Way family of Galaxies. The colonist in the sleeper ship is transport to another galaxy. The technology used gives the commander of the ship a choice of galaxies.

I decided to do some research on the names of the galaxies in the Milky Way family. The largest galaxies in this family are the Milky Way, Andromeda, and Triangulum galaxies. After that there are several dwarf galaxies, now all I have to do is pick out two dwarf galaxies and I have one issue solved. There are several more issues or problems confronting me, but I'm sure I will find a solution.

The mystery of the missing Spoons

I want to know what happened to all our spoons. Mom and I used to have two complete sets of flat ware. Now all we have is knives and forks, with a few mismatched spoons. We are missing both teaspoons and tablespoons, but we have fewer teaspoons then tablespoons.

All right, the logical explanation is that someone inadvertently threw into the trash, which is probably what happened. However, a logical explanation doesn't make a very good story. I am looking for a plot to a story about spoons. A story where the spoons get thrown into the trash is boring and not a good story.

Therefore, rejecting the logical explanation what are some other good explanations for the missing spoons? I suppose it depends on the genre of story. In fantasy stories elves, gnomes or some other fantasy creature could steal the spoons, but why would they take only spoons and leave both the knives and forks behind.

If it is a science fiction story, you replace the elves and gnomes with aliens from another planet or star system. However, we have the problem of motive of why they only take spoons. Those are intriguing speculations for a writer of fantasy and science fiction.

An interesting website for Fantasy authors to check

I was surfing the internet this last week end and I found an intriguing website. The site called Seventh Sanctum and it has tools for writers, as well as artists and gamers. There are random monster and character generators. In addition, there are contest and other interesting sections for any one interest in fantasy and science fiction. It is a good place to hang out and get your muse working.

Since I just found it, I haven't investigated all the generators and contests yet. You can be sure I will in the next few weeks. I'm always on the look out for interesting websites with contests for writers, artist and gamers. I will have to admit that it's been a while since I played anything but Free Cell and Spider Solitary. Those two games are on my hard drive and I don't have to get on line to play them.

Let's face it, with a telephone connection to the internet playing interactive games is a bit slow. I think what I need is either DSL (which is what I want) or a cable modem (which I may be forced to get). I will have to get the cable modem if I get cable T.V. because my T.V. sit won't work after February unless I get cable or satellite. If it was just me, I would forget the entire T.V. all together and get all my information off the internet, but my mother and I share a house, so keeping the T.V. is necessary.

I need an idea to write about

I'm one of the editors of the fantasy newsletter on writing.com. I just completed the November edition I'm responsible for and now I need an idea for the December edition. Normally I have all sorts of ideas, but this time I seem to be fresh out.

The edition I just finished concerned the end of the world. I used the suggestion that December 21, 2012 will be the end of the world. December 21, 2012 is the final date in the 13-year Mayan Long Count Calendar. This date refers to the end of a cycle and not the end of the world, unless of course we panic when winter solstice 2012 arrives. Maybe the entire human race should call in well to work that day and just stay home.

The only thing I can come up with at this moment is Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. The questions a writer asked when creating the plot to a short story or novel. My problem is that they don't excite me. I guess they just don't stick the same chords as the end of the world. I need to have the newsletter completed by December 8. However, I need to come up with an idea so that I can look for stories on writing.com to feature in the newsletter.
