NaNoWriMo Day 30: I wrote 54,658 Words in November

Last night, I uploaded my novel to nanowrimo.org for the official word count. I wrote 54,658 words in November 2013, which is 4,658 more words then the goal. I still have to edit Midnight in Suburbia, which I hope to start in December.

The goal exceeded,
I inhale crisp morning air
and pour another
cup of black coffee.

The word count exceeded,
I cut a huge slice of pumpkin pie,
smother it with whipped cream
and relax with a hot cup of coffee,
while wondering
"Where do I go from here?"
"What  is my next move?"

NaNoWriMo Day 29: Update and a poem

    NaNoWriMo Day 29: Chapter 29 Word Count = 1,907
    NaNoWriMo Day 29: Chapter 30 Word Count = 1,441
Total Word Count for NaNoWriMo Day 29 = 3,348
Total NaNoWriMo Word Count for November = 54,259
    Percentage of 50,000 Words = 108%

I have accomplished the goal of 50,000 word and, I think, I have finished the novel. I am going to download what I have written to a MS Word Document for editing. I will do a spell check and then I will upload it to the NaNoWriMo website for a final count.

    The goal is achieved,
    but is the novel finished:
Do I need one more chapter?

    Sunday Thoughts

    Clouds decorate the morning sky.
    Las Vegas
    is still
    damp and chilly
after three (or is it four)
    days of rain.

    I still have 20%
of my 50,000 word novel to write
    and there are only six
    days remaining in November.

    A cup of hot tea
    sustaining me
    while I contemplate
    the next chapter.

    NaNoWriMo Day 22 Word Count = 0
Sunset in Suburbia Chapters I have to word on = Chapter 21, 22, and 23
Total Word Count To Date = 36,818
    Percentage of 50,000 Word Goal = 73%

On a rainy day in Vegas
When outside activity gets me wet
The only thing I can do
    Is remain indoors and write.

I don't know how many chapters I will finish today. I don't know if I can remain up all night and write. I thought I would be able to stay up all night Thursday night, but that turned out to be impossible. I hope I can remain awake all night tonight and tomorrow night; however, that may be difficult.

I do know that I need to make a fresh carafe of coffee and fix me something to eat. I need to fix me something a little more substantial then cookies (I have a package of chocolate cookies), so I will put some milk and cold cereal in a microwaveable container and heat it some so that I can have hot cereal on this chilly rainy Saturday. I still have eggs in the refrigerator and some whole potatoes I can fix for lunch. The only problem with being by myself is that I have to interrupt my writing to fix me something to eat.

NaNoWriMo Day 20: Update and thoughts

NaNoWriMo Day 19 and Chapter 19 Word Count = 1,673
Total NaNoWriMo Word Count To Date = 34,487
    Percentage of 50,000 Word Goal = 68%

This morning I feel rushed. I have so much to do and, I feel as if, I have so little time to do it. I have to take a deep breath and calm down or I will not accomplish anything today. Yesterday, I did all right; I did the best I could under the circumstances. The only thing I really want to do is right; however, as I sit at the computer and look across the living room, I see the plate from last night's cheese snack waiting to be washed.

I have dishes to do, so before I go back in the kitchen, I have to pick up the plate and take it with me. I have dishes in the sink soaking, which is a bad habit I have to change. I suspect I may be moving into a place with three other people. If I have room mates or quad mates, I cannot leave dishes overnight. Of course, if the place has a working dishwasher then there will not be a problem because I can rinse my dirty dishes and put them in the dishwasher; however, I am not sure I will be that lucky.

    I desire to write
while I sip hot dark coffee
    one cup at a time

    Percentage of 50,000 Word Goal = 65%

Despite the difficulties of a late start because of a doctor's appointment, having visitors, and encountering a slight hiccup in my sprint exercises, I wrote more words in a single day (November 18) then ever before. I exceeded my previous one day word count record, of 2,043 words, on November 5, (I am not counting the 3,607 words I wrote on November 17 because part of that making up for being one day behind on my NaNoWriMo word count).

Today's goal to complete Chapter 18 of Midnight in Suburbia. I like to think of each day of National Novel Writing month as a chapter in my novel. If I think of it this way it helps me focus on the plot even though I do not necessarily follow the outline I created in October.

    NaNoWriMo Day 16 word count = 0
Total Words Written To Date = 26,840
Percentage of 50,000 NaNoWriMo Word Count Accomplished = 53%

    Thoughts on Procrastination

    Because I procrastinated
    I am behind 1,667 words
    even though
    the time is last
    it may be possible
to catch up on the word count.

Food for Thought: “You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood.
    What mood is that?
    Last-minute panic.”
    Bill Watterson

Well I'm not quite to the point of "Last-minute panic." However, I will be if I do not get back to writing Midnight in Suburbia.

    Friday Thoughts on Writing

I can stand up for only about five minutes at a time before my leg starts hurting and I have to sit down. This makes washing dishes difficult because it means I do not get all the dishes washed. I have to figure a way to use this experience in my writing.

I realized this morning that one of the things I will miss about living in this house is the sound of a Harley-Davidson going past my house. The neighbor down the street has a Harley that he drives to work in the fall and winter. Every morning, I hear him going west on Bracken and I am going to miss the sound of his Harley when it passes my house. Perhaps I need to write an ode to a Harley-Davidson.

Another thing I am going to miss is the way this house feels when I am alone. Until this year, I never realized how lonely silence can be. All right, I am not talking about complete silence here because I can hear the refrigerator running (and I do not want anyone to tell me to go catch it). I can also hear the neighbors dog barking, which he does not do very often. I need to use this experience in one of my stories or poems.

NaNoWriMo Day 13: Update from a wery writer

    NaNoWriMo Day 12 word count = 1,757
Total word count to date = 21,588

I am tired! I spent the entire morning waiting in line for food. The only writing I accomplished was a couple of entries in my pen and paper journal, which I carry with me at all times. I finally got back home about 11:45 am or 12:00 pm and carried the food I picked up this morning into the house. I then made a carafe of coffee, ate a couple of bananas and an egg sandwich. Then visitors came and I spent a couple of hours talking to them, while cleaning out a filing cabinet that I am leaving in the house when I move.

I am tired! I cannot go to sleep because I am not sleepy. I cannot go to sleep because I have to catch up on the writing I did not do this morning because I was waiting in line. I also have to make out some papers and print a three or four items off before I can go to bed. In addition, my back hurts from standing in line so long, so I think I will get something else to eat and take a pain pill.

NaNoWriMo Day 12: Update And Some Thoughts on Midnight in Suburbia

    NaNoWriMo Day 11 word count = 1,898
Total word count to date = 19,831
    Percentage of 50,000 word goal = 39

I have completed eleven chapter of Midnight in Suburbia and I have nineteen chapters left to write. I think of each day's writing as a chapter because that helps me focus on the plan I created in October. I am not following that plan completely, but I am using it as a guide.

I realized Sunday that there is at least one chapter I have not spell checked, I just cannot remember which chapter. I also realized that I used the name Ruby to refer to the main character's office manager rather then Rachel, but I am not sure which chapter I was working on at the time. I am not going back and look for either of those chapters until December.

I begin the rewrite in December so I can spell check, grammar check, and check the names of each character in the novel. I am in the middle of Novel Writing Month and moving so I do not have a lot of time to go back check much of anything in the chapters I have written to date. I suppose I could have a lot more on my plate and I will as soon as I have changed residence.

NaNoWriMo Day 11: Update and Some Thoughts

    NaNoWriMo Day 10 word count = 1,803
Total word count to date = 17,933

Yesterday, when I reread what I had written I noticed some misspelled words. Now I have to decide whether to, take time from NaNoWriMo and, go back to do a spell check or just let the chapter remain as it is until December. Since I have to down load the chapters to another computer to do rewriting and grammar checking, I'll wait until December to correct the spelling as well.

I'm saving the chapters to a book in my writing.com port, so I can do spell checking. I didn't do any spell checking last night because by the time I was finished the chapter and other things I had to do online, I wanted to fall asleep on my keyboard. I went to the couch (which is the closest thing I have to a bed) and eventually went to sleep.

I would be nice if I got a chance for a nap this afternoon, but that isn't possible. Besides participating in National Novel Writing Month, I'm attempting to pack and find a place to live. All right, this is probably, my own fault; however, there isn't any use obsessing on that now because I'm too busy writing and packing to have time to worry or rather obsess over what I should have done.

NaNoWriMo Day 10: Word Count Update and My week in Review

    NaNoWriMo Day 9 word count = 1,718
Total Word count to date = 16,130

    My Week in Review

     1. Deleted the online game website from my favorites so I am not tempted to log on.

     2. Put Las Vegas Review-Journal website on my favorites list because I see no need in having a daily paper delivered to the house or anywhere that I live if I don't read it everyday. The website contains almost everything I want to read.

     3. Put a website on my favorites that gives mes access to comic strips, which is one of the reasons I was taking a newspaper. If I can access the comic strips on line then I don't need to subscribe to a newspaper.

     4. Set my writing and housework goals for this week, which I may or may not post in tomorrow's entry. This depends on whether I remember to post them here after I post them on writing.com.

     5. Found a video on YouTube that gives instructions on dealing with the blue screen of death, now all I have to do is watch it a couple more times and take notes.

     6. Made arrangements to look at an apartment on Tuesday because Monday is a holiday and the office is closed on weekends and holidays.

     7. Check my Facebook page and friended someone I haven't seen or heard from in several years.

     8. Posted an update to my Facebook page by posting the links to a couple of blog entries.

     9. Found out that, even when I don't close the lid on the washer, it still thinks that it went through the was cycle when it didn't.

    10. Submitted two prescriptions that I have to pick up today.

NaNoWriMo Day 9: November 9, 2013 in Las Vega

    NaNoWriMo Day 8 word count = 1,6733
Total word count to day = 14,409

    Update on My Life

     1.  I have to find a place I to live by the end of the week (at least I think so).
     2.  While attempting to my my weekly scanner upload on my other computer I encountered the Blue Screen of Death. I finally go the scanner uploaded without encountering any more problems.
     3.  This afternoon I am going to look at an apartment, which I am not sure I can afford; however, I am going to look at it anyway.
      4.  This is the middle of the month and my bank account is almost drained from paying bills, so I am not sure how I am going to afford moving cost.
     5.  I have to turn in two prescriptions so that I can pick them up tomorrow. I  have enough money to pay for the prescriptions, but not much else.
     6.  I need gas in the car.
     7.  This is Day 9 of NaNoWriMo and I had delusions that I would be able to remain in this house until Day 25.
     8.  This is just another test of my persistence, which is beginning to wear a bit thin.
     9.  I need to purchase a couple dozen cookies for a dinner I am attending on Wednesday, November 20.
    10. I need to earn enough Gift Points on writing.com to purchase another three month premium membership by December 31, 2013.

That is all that I can think of today, but I have no doubt that life will attempt to kick me in the teeth with something else before the end of NaNoWriMo or the end of the year. Considering that I have a full set of dentures you would think that life would find somebody with their original teeth still in their mouth. Yes, I still have my weird sense of humor.

NaNoWriMo Day 8: I pushed through writer's block yesterday

    NaNoWriMo Day 7 word count = 1,740
Total word count to date = 12,736

I had a little difficulty with writer's block yesterday, but I pushed through it and finished day 7, chapter 7. This morning I'm a bit tired, but I think that comes from spending most of Thursday morning driving across town and going to the grocery story. I have a couple of prescriptions to turn in, but I'll submit those this afternoon and pick them up sometime on Saturday.

    weariness sits in
    breakfast sandwich and coffee
    I need more to eat

This morning I had a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, which is hardly enough to keep the energy moving and my thoughts focused on accomplishing my goals. The next sandwich I fix will be egg and cheese. I need more protein if I'm going to accomplish the goal of 50,000 word by the end of November.

  • NaNoWriMo Day 7: Thankful Thursday

    Today I am thankful...

    1.  ...that I was able to make my daily word count goal, despite the fact that I got a late start yesterday. II wrote 1,738 words on Day 6, which brought my total word count up to 10,996,

    2.  ...for Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Ode to Joy), which I am listening to while I am composing this entry.

    3.  ...that I have access to the website Write or Die because timed writing helps dispel writer's block, which I cannot afford to experience during NaNoWriMo.

    4.  ...for the individual bags of cookies and pretzels I received this morning with my senior food allotment because now I have something to nibble on while I compose this entry.

    5.  ...that I have an automatic washer because I can put the clothes in the washer and let them wash while I am doing something else.

    6.  ...for the nice weather we have here in Las Vegas.

    7.  ...that I have an automatic clothes dryer because I do not have to hang clothes outside or over furniture to dry.

    8.  ...for hot water because I dislike taking a cold shower in autumn.

    9.  ...that I was able to make fresh coffee this morning. I am a writer, so I do not need any reason to be thankful for coffee.

    10.  ...for my internet connection because it helps me stay in touch with my friends and family.

NaNoWriMo Day 6: Updating my prograss and some thoughts about my chapters

    NaNoWriMo Day 5 word count = 9,258
    Chapter 5 word count = 2,043

Six days into National Novel Writing Month and I am having second thought about chapter 1. This is normal for me except that it is a little early in the month. Normally I start having second thought on my beginning chapter half-way through the month and then I write another chapter that I think would be a better beginning to the book. I do not rewrite any chapter I have completed, but I do write a new chapter and add it to my NaNoWriMo novel.

I completed a poem with the same name as my novel. The poem is not part of my word count because I started it before NaNoWriMo begin, but I may use it as the introduction or dedication after I finish the novel. I do not write my novel's introduction or dedication during NaNoWriMo; all though, sometimes I write a prologue. I did not write prologue yet, but I am still considering writing one before the end of November. This year I begins with chapter one without even considering what I wanted to say in the prologue.

NaNoWriMo Day 3: A Good Start to National Novel Writing Month

It's day three of NaNoWriMo and I have written 3,606 words, which is 7% of the 50,000 word total. Today I have at least 1,667 more words to write on the third chapter (day) of Midnight in Suburbia. I call each day's writing effort a chapter because it helps me focus on what comes next. I suspect that the first two chapters I've written would be better in on chapter, but I don't have to worry about that until December when I start editing the document.

    fifty thousand words
    written one-day-at-a-time
    the focus is clear

I've had a good start to the month even though I started each day off slowly. It's winter and I don't like to start before sunrise. This means I have to get up, turn the alarm off, turn the computer on (I have to get the virus check over before I start working), take my medication, and snuggle under a blanket for a little bit while say prayers and meditate. Then I get up, warm some coffee up in the microwave, put a fresh carafe to brew (writing 1,667 words a day require fuel), start the washing machine or dry last night's laundry, and get to work.

NaNoWriMo Day 2: Yesterday's Accomplishments and Lessons

    NaNoWriMo Day 1 Word count = 1,753
    NaNoWriMo Day 1 2 pm sprint = 697

    What did I learn yesterday?

Lesson 1:  Don't worry about spelling when doing the sprint because when I copy the sprint exercise to the chapter I can run a spell check to find the proper spelling of any miss spelled words.

Lesson 2:  Don't worry about grammar until after November 30 because part of rewriting and editing is grammar checking.

Lesson 3:   Don't be so focused on NaNoWriMo that I forget to make a shopping list before going to the grocery story. I didn't take a shopping list with me yesterday when I went to pick up some necessities, as a result I forgot to purchase laundry soap. This means I have to make an extra and unplanned strip to the store for laundry soap. The extra trip will cut into my NaNoWriMo writing time.

NaNoWriMo Day 1: November Goals off at a Slow Start

After getting off to a slow start, I am on my way to achieving my NaNoWriMo goals for November...

    1.  Write 1,667 words a day on Midnight in Suburbia.
    2.  Post word count every evening about 10:30 PM Pacific Time at National Novel Writing Month.
    3.  Post word count every evening about 8:00 PM Pacific Time on writing.com.
    4.  Post yesterday's word count between 4;00 and 6:00 AM Pacific Time in this blog.

Things I have learned after this morning's slow start...

    1.  I will doze off during meditation.
    2.  Have glass of water sitting next to pill in my sleeping area.
    3.  Put other computer into hibernation at night rather then turning it (this saves time when starting the virus detection program each morning).
    4.  Have coffee ready to turn on each morning (I still have to make fresh coffee today).
    5.  At night, pour the day's left over coffee into mug ready to warm up in the microwave each morning.
    6.  Make up powdered milk the night before so I can have cereal and coffee for breakfast instead of chocolate and coffee.
