Laughter and Pain

I read an interesting article in this morning's edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The article, by Paul Harasim, was in the Health section (D) of the newspaper under the feature To Your Health and titled "Cleansing laughter eases pain of loss".

In this article, Mr. Harasim, discusses how laughter can ease both the emotional pain of losing a friend and physical pain. I know, from my own experience with grief, that laughter can ease the emotional pain of lose, because laughter has helped me deal with my mother's death. However, it is the first time I have heard that it helped with physical pain as well.

I am going to try using laughter as a method of dealing with physical pain. I have pain medication, but it has its limits and side effects. I do not like to depend on the medication and I do not take it unless I am in excruciating pain. I have two reasons for being careful about the way I take the pain medication. First, I do not want to become addicted to it. Second, the pain tablets that I use could have an effect on my liver. I will try ten minutes of laughter a day and then at my next doctor's appointment discuss the situation with my doctor.

Turn back the clocks

It is Saturday, November 05, 2011 and tomorrow morning at 2:00 AM, we turn the clocks back. One of the headlines in today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal read “Time to Go Back in Time”, with the photo of clocks underneath. That headline should inspire a few stories or poems.

It is fall and we step back in time one hour, while in the spring, we step forward one hour. That one hour messes up my sense of time for a couple of days. I am not sure how it will affect my sleep. As it is, I wake up sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 AM on a regular basis. Sometimes, I wake up about 1:00 AM then go back to sleep for about an hour and wake up again. This cycle usually last for a couple of weeks and then I go back to my regular sleep pattern.

For the past few day, I wake up about 1:05 go back to sleep until about 2:00, when I usually get up. If this pattern continues tonight, then I can turn the clocks back then; however, I need to turn only three clocks back, which are the alarm, the coffee pot, and the microwave because the rest of the clocks are automatically set back by their programs.

I enjoy reading the Sunday edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal while sipping a cup of hot coffee. Perhaps that is the reason I wait until after brewing coffee to pick up the newspaper.

Spring is on the Way

I heard a bird sing
Its sweet melody echoed
Through my neighborhood

I went out to pick up today's edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and a bird was singing. Because its song was so sweet, I think the bird is a nightingale. I haven't heard a nightingale sing in a while, therefore, spring must be on its way.

I'm looking forward to spring. I like to write in spring, I write all year long, but spring seems to bring out my muse. It must be the beautiful flowers and the warmer weather. The desert blooms in the spring. Spring 2010 should be exceptionally beautiful because of all the rain we've had this year. Las Vegas has had more rain in January 2010 then in all of 2009.

Living in Las Vegas is interesting

There is apparently an advertising truck driving along Las Vegas Blvd. (the Las Vegas Strip) with strippers climbing poles. It's one of those truck that pulls a glass enclosed trailer or something like similar. The only time I've glimpse this is on the news because I usually avoid the Las Vegas Strip that time of night.

One of the Strip Clubs is in charge of this truck and its trailer. It has most people her upset, which is understandable, since there are enough ordinary driving distraction without pole dances wearing bikinis. The proper authorities are taking the mater up, I have no idea what their decision will be on this mater.

My concern is the distraction it causes. We have enough challenged drivers in this city without this type of distraction causing more driving hazards. Yes, living in Las Vegas is interesting and becoming more interesting all the time. I can't wait to get tomorrow's Review-Journal and see what else is going on in Las Vegas.

Interesting articles in the Saturday Edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal

have a specific method of reading the daily newspaper. I read the comics first, with a hot cup of coffee sitting on the table in front of me. My father read the comics to me this way when I was a child. I read the comics this way Sunday through Saturday.

After I finish the comics, then I read Variety section. After that, I go the front page, except on Saturday. On Saturday, the Religious section is next. Today (Saturday, October 24, 2009) the Religious section had a story about an artist, R. Crumb, who drew a comic-book version of Genesis.

The other interesting article was a commentary by Jane Ann Morrison about "Personhood Nevada". The commentary concerned a petition to get this subject on the ballet in 2010. Since I have not personally investigated this item, I have no opinion on it. After I investigate the issue fully, I will have an opinion.

Staring at my computer monitor on the last day of August 2009

I'm not sure why I'm staring at blankly at my computer screen this morning. I don't have a problem with writers' block or blog block because I completed two poems and an entry in another blog.

I've ate breakfast this morning and am on my third cup of coffee. I'm awake and aware of what's going on in the world around me. Perhaps that's my problem, there is so much going on that I'm having difficulty finding a subject to write about.

I have to finish my coffee and then I'll go out and get the Monday morning paper. Perhaps I can find an interesting story in the Las Vegas Review Journal. I'm going to have to make another entry today anyway, I haven't completed the word count goal in any of my blogs yet.

The reason writers need to take a daily newspaper

I take a daily newspaper. Every morning I go out and pick the day's paper, which is lying in my driveway up. In yesterdays paper I found two articles that made me thankful I subscribe to and read a daily paper.

I live in Las Vegas, therefore I subscribe to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. On the front page of the RJ there was a story from the Washington Post. This article by Rob Stein was titled "Researchers give monkey genes from two mothers". This would make a great plot for a short story or piece of flash fiction.

The other article was in the front section of the RJ, but on page 9. John Johnson, JR. wrote this article, which was from the Las Angeles Times. The title of this article is "Planet defies physics, survives near sun" and is another good idea for a science fiction story.

A writer should subscribe to a daily newspaper because the articles in the paper give the writer's muse ideas for stories or poems. In addition, going out to pick up the morning or afternoon paper gives the writer some exercise.

I Subscribed to the Weekend Edition of the RJ

I haven't subscribed to the newspaper in a long time. However, last Sunday a young man came to my door and I subscribed to the weekend edition of the Las Vegas Review Journal. The paper comes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. I received my first Sunday edition this morning.

It's nice to have a Sunday paper again. The Sunday paper has a T.V. Guide in it and lots of interesting stories. This morning I sit down with the Sunday comics and coffee. I had forgotten how much I enjoy reading the comics and sipping coffee. Today's comics had to do with Christmas, which is next Thursday. I even received a Christmas card from the carrier with the paper.

Now that I have a weekly T.V. Guide, I can plan my T.V. watching instead of just catching whatever is on when I decided to look at T.V. I like the news, Dr. Phil (not everyday), the Britcoms on Channel 10, nature shows and some Sitcoms. I can now decide which ones I want to watch before turning on the T.V. This will help plan the week's schedule.

I'm looking forward to watching T.V. this week. The Christmas week schedule is always interesting and educational. I remember watching T.V. during Christmas week with my Grandparents. My Grandmother always enjoyed all the December specials, but Christmas week was especially enjoyable because they had so many of the old Christmas shows on. In addition, most of the regular shows had special Christmas shows.
