Thoughtful Thursday: The Pain of Writing

I intended to write something about poetry today, but my body decided otherwise. If the joint point gets excreting today then I will have to take a tramadol-acemtaminophn tablet, but only if the point forces me to stop writing. I do not like to take the medication and my doctor has advised me to take it sparingly and when absolutely necessary. This is because of the effect that the medication has on some of my organs.

The pain of writing
sometimes is just physical
arthritis keyboard.

My joints are not the only part of my body that hurts, so the problem may not be any form of arthritis. I just have to learn to endure and figure out what is causing the problem. Since my stomach hurts it could be something I ate, which means I have to start keeping a food diary. I tried keeping this type of diary once without much success. I could be more successful now because I live alone and am not eating out as much as I used to.

The pain goes away
when I focus on blogging
or other writing.

I feel better now that I am focusing on this entry. Maybe the passage of time or getting my mind away from the pain. I think I will take a break in a few minutes to say some prayers and fix me something more to eat then a peanut butter sandwich.

    I'm Back Online

It's February 4, I'm back online writing. I spent Monday, February 3, not writing. There is no excuse for not making  an entry in my pen and paper journal, but I didn't write a single word on Monday. Today, I spent the morning getting the internet, telephone, and cable working. The tech came in and set it up properly, but after that Murphy took over, forcing me to be on and off the phone dealing with little issue.

Another thing I did today was recover from moving things into my apartment on Monday. Moving is a pain. Moving is tiring. I still have to go to the house tomorrow to see if I got everything and then go to t he water company to have them turn the water off there. I can call the power company and have them turn the power off, but I have to go to water company office.

All that means half a day (at least) of dealing with non-writing issues. It means more  pain. Then on Thursday morning I have to have a blood test. That isn't so bad, but I doubt that the doctor is going to like the outcome because I've spent the week not eating properly. I just hope that my potassium level is now because if it isn't then the doctor may send me to the emergency room, which means less time writing and getting the stuff in my apartment situated. Not to mention the possibility of spending some time in the hospital.

The only thing I can do is say prayers and make sure I have my pen and paper journal with me.  I'm not going to spend another offline day without writing about it,. I'm feeling better this evening, but I  think that's because I took a pain pill and rested from moving stuff into the apartment on Monday.

    Laughter and Pain

I read an interesting article in this morning's edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The article, by Paul Harasim, was in the Health section (D) of the newspaper under the feature To Your Health and titled "Cleansing laughter eases pain of loss".

In this article, Mr. Harasim, discusses how laughter can ease both the emotional pain of losing a friend and physical pain. I know, from my own experience with grief, that laughter can ease the emotional pain of lose, because laughter has helped me deal with my mother's death. However, it is the first time I have heard that it helped with physical pain as well.

I am going to try using laughter as a method of dealing with physical pain. I have pain medication, but it has its limits and side effects. I do not like to depend on the medication and I do not take it unless I am in excruciating pain. I have two reasons for being careful about the way I take the pain medication. First, I do not want to become addicted to it. Second, the pain tablets that I use could have an effect on my liver. I will try ten minutes of laughter a day and then at my next doctor's appointment discuss the situation with my doctor.

    Morning Stiffness in Las Vegas

    a cold wind blowing
the shadows of tree limbs dance
    birds fly back to nest

This morning, a cold wind is blowing through Las Vegas. My stiff knees ache, I need to lose weight. Exercise would help, but the stiffness and the ache discourage walking. I have pain pills, but I cannot take one of those until I eat.

I boxes and other stuff to load into the car and unload at the storage unit, which is not going to help my osteoarthritis or my strained rotator cuff. I am not sure whether I should take the pain pills before starting the loading and unloading or after I finish. I cannot put off taking the items to the storage unit, so I will have to take those meds sometime today.

    pain medication
    for the osteoarthritis
    use it sparingly

    Midweek Reflections on my bed

Before I go any farther with this entry, I want to warn the reader that it is not as risqué as it sounds. In fact, it is not risqué at all.

For several months, I slept either on a love seat or on couch. However, Monday I decided that since I have, what I thought was, perfectly good bed I would sleep on it. Now I remember why I was not sleeping in my bed; the mattress is too uncomfortable for a good nights sleep.

For the past two nights, I have been in pain. I am not talking about the little ache one gets after a certain age. I am referring to real “wake me up in the middle of the night” excruciating cannot get out of bed without screaming pain. Once I force myself to get up, I hobble through the house to the kitchen where I take my first morning medication (which is not a pain pill). Then I go into the living room sit down on the couch and fall asleep.

I get more rest sitting on the couch sleeping then I do in my bed. I need a new mattress. I probably also need a new bed frame, but right now I would settle for a box springs and mattress even if I had to put them on the floor. I just want a good night’s sleep without the pain in my knees or back waking me up.

    I want a new bed
    I want a restful mattress
    Wake up without pain

    The pain of writing

Sometimes writing can be a pain. I am talking about physical pain and not the pain of bloggers block, writers' block or rewriting. Normally, I feel more body aches and pains in winter when the cold penetrates my joints; however, on this beautiful summer morning I am noticing aches and pains that were not there yesterday.

I have knee pain all year round. I wake up with it everyday. The pain in my knee goes away for a little while during the day. This morning my neck and shoulders ache, which could be the results of the way I slept last night.

This morning the pain seems to be waiting on the edge of consciousness for me to let down my guard. I am having a psoriasis flare-up, so that could be part of the problem; if it is then I just have to deal with the psoriasis and not worry about anything else.

I don't like taking medication for pain. At the moment, I don't have anything in the house except prescription pain pills. I'm not going to use them during the day because I don't like the affect and the pain is not that bad.

I have to make an appointment with my doctor, so I will discuss the issue with her. I doubt that I get any answers except suggesting tests or x-rays. Perhaps the pain is just a part of the aging process and something I am going to have to deal with the rest of my life. Well, I am not going to let it stop me from writing or doing anything else I enjoy. I will just deal with it.
