Sunday Speculations: Excessive Heat Warning

Excessive heat warning
Sunday and Monday

I plan to get a lot of writing and housework accomplished because of the excessive heat warning. Since my car does not have a working air conditioner I intend to remain inside my cool apartment. I may not be able to do this because no matter what I plan something always or rather almost always comes up to change those plans. However, this week I will do my best to remain indoors.

When I was younger (under 65) the heat did not bother me. It did not matter that my car's air conditioner was broken. However, that all changed when I turned 66. I am not sure whether the change had to do with my age health conditions or the increase in summer temperatures in the Las Vegas area. Whatever the cause I summer without an air conditioner is difficult to deal with. This is why I try to stay in during the day.

Evening temperatures are a little easier to handle. Most of the time I do not have a problem in the evening. True I drive with at least one window down, which sometimes helps deal with the hear. This year I have started putting bottles of water in the freezer so that I have something to take with me when I go out.

Severe weather alert
Another excessive heat warning
Temperatures rise past 110 degrees

A Humid Day in Las Vegas

    Yesterday’s rain left
    The humidity behind
    The city swelters

The air conditioning has not come on all day, so the temperature in the house did not get above 82 degrees. Because of the humidity, it feels warmer. I like the heat better without the humidity. I enjoyed watching the rain yesterday; however, I am not enjoying the humidity today.

    Beware the excessive heat

    Temperature records
    Broken by excessive heat
    Drink lots of water

This morning’s shopping expedition wore me out. I only made three stops, but without air conditioning in my car that was too many. I took water with me, still when I returned home I was thirsty and tired. I will make fewer stops when I go out the rest of the month.

    Writing in a warm house

I scraped together enough money to get the heat pump fixed. The techs came yesterday and spent two hours fixing the unit. I now have heat in the house. It is nice to write in a warm house again.

I can write in a cold house, but it is distracting when you are cold. I wore three or four layers of clothing and I was still cold. I am not sure yet how I am going to use this experience in my writing, but I will use it in some way.

Getting the heat fixed was less then I originally thought, but the cost still put a dent in this month’s budget. I have to raise the money for some prescriptions this week, but I have some recyclable items to sell and a couple of accounts to check online. I find some money somewhere; I just do not know where it will come from at this point.

Thanksgiving is Thursday I turned the heat on early

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 25, and I turned the heat on in our house today. The weather in Las Vegas is chilly bordering on cold with intermittent winds. The outside temperature this morning was 45 degrees and the inside (in my house) got down to 60 degrees; time to turn the heat on.

I set the heat at 63 degrees, which is still a bit chilly. I cannot set it any higher because the power bill gets outrageous and that is a nice way of putting it. I just got the last power bill completely paid. I do not know what the power bill is going to be like because the power company reads the meter November 29.

I had to turn the heat on this morning because I could not stand it any more. It gets cold sitting at a computer typing a story. When I cannot concentrate on the story or poem I am composing because of the cold, then it is time to turn the heat on.

    The central air sings
    A warm melody scatters
    Autumn’s morning chill
