Writing on the Edge of Dawn

I write
on the edge of dawn
waiting for the light of day.

I write
on the edge of silence
listening to the nightingales song.

I write
on the edge of mourning
waiting for tears to fall.

I write
on the edge of dawn
as the light of a new day
reveals the beauty of love.

Another day, another poem, or the beginning of another poem. Sometimes the words just pop into my head and I have to write them down. Sometimes I spend several minutes or hours just staring at the screen or a dishpan full of water waiting for the lightning of inspiration. Sometimes I begin a poem one way and it ends in another. Sometimes I change themes or subjects in the middle of the poem.

Haibun-Haiku: Beauty reflected in Las Vegas

    beauty reflected
    morning star precedes daybreak
    Las Vegas awakes

I saw the morning star again today when I went out to pick up the paper. The sky was slowing turning from silk black the cloud white, all though I did not yet know yet if it was cloudy or just the color of the sky preceding the dawn.

As I write this, I look out my window and watch as the rising sun turns clouds pink. I can now see that it is partly cloudy, I do not think we will have rain. The clouds are not rain clouds; they are just the ordinary clouds that float across the desert’s blue sky this time of year.

    the pinkish-white clouds
    announce arrival of dawn
    a new day begins

    The Clouds Outside My window

    Morning wisps of mist
ghost trails across the blue sky
    chilled by winter's dawn.

Writing about Dawn in Las Vegas

Jalál (Glory), 12 Rahmat (Mercy), 165 BE – Saturday, July 5, 2008 about 5:13 AM PDT

As I sit looking out my living room window, the sky above my garage slowly transforms from deep ebony to blue. The sun is rising above Sunrise Mountain; it has not crested the Mountain's peek yet nor risen above the east part of the city.

However, dawn is approaching the change in the color of the sky proclaims Sol's return. A new day is about to wake the city from its fit full sleep. Las Vegas does not truly sleep, either during the night or during the day. Part of the city is always wide-awake no matter what time it is. Las Vegas is a 24/7 town, cannot close its eyes and sleep restfully through the night. Somewhere in the city, there is always some type of activity.

Dawn is a special time in Las Vegas; it is the point between the city's two natures. The city's nighttime activity and people are preparing for rest. The city's daylight business and citizens are waking up and getting ready to begin their day. The city seems to pause for a few seconds, perhaps in meditation or prayer, before the new day starts.

The sky above my garage is now pale blue, almost white as the sun nears the horizons. The sun's rays are transforming the sky and announcing the coming of daylight. Morning is here, it is time for another cup of coffee and breakfast considerations. It is time to stop and say prayers, meditate, drive home or drive to work, depending on an individual's plans for the day.

    Sacred Things

Daily Writing Practice Prompt for December 26, 2007 - Write about something Sacred.

Many things in this world that are sacred. There are religious symbols, holy books and the dawn of day. Dawn is sacred to me because you can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit when you pray. For me dawn includes the hour before and the hour after the sun rises over Sunrise Mountain.

There are two mountains on the east side of Las Vegas that are referred to as Sunrise Mountain. The name of one mountain is Sunrise Mountain and the other one is Frenchman's Mountain. I'm not sure which is which because from my house I can see both of them. I think the one that is easiest to see is Frenchman's Mountain, but I can't be sure.

The reason dawn is sacred is because of the silence and tranquility that surrounds it. Even in Las Vegas, there is a hush before and after the sunrises. In some sections of town the hush is more obvious then in others because it is a hush that is felt rather than heard.

I think dawn is probably the best time to say prayers because it feels sacred. Dawn is tranquil and the hush is felt. I enjoy dawn, I enjoy watching the sun rise and the sky turn slowly blue. At dawn the day is uncluttered by worries and fears, it is a new day with a great deal of potential; a day that one can make better then the day before.

    Lost Days

    16 Mashiyyat 164 B.E. - Friday, October 12, 2007 about 6:57 AM PDT

It's been a couple of days since I made an entry and I feel like those days were lost. Not that I didn't get anything accomplished. I achieve a lot, but just not anything written except a couple of poems and gratitude journal entries. I think the blog entries are now my warming up writing exercises. If I don't make an entry I can't seem to write much else. I think the blogging works for my muse like coffee works for my body and prayers work for my soul. A blog entry wakes up my muse and gets her going in the morning or any other time of day.

I just looked out my living room window and saw the morning sun reflecting off the olive and the stone pine trees. This time of year the first rays of dawn transform the leaves of the olive tree and bark of the pine tree to gold. It's a beautiful sight to wake up to. Perhaps that's why I turn off the alarm of a morning and sit on the couch to doze for a while. The view out of my bedroom window isn't as spectacular; it's just the sky and a few oleander limbs.
