Reading Love Poems

Reading love poems
when you have no one to love
is like walking through a cemetary
looking for a marker
with a name
erased
by the wind,
the rain,
and the snow.

    Memorial Day 2013: Remembering

    Remembering the sacrifices made,
Remembering the price of freedom paid,
    Flags wave above their headstones,
    As we remember them today.

We shed tears remembering the faces
Of those who made the sacrifice,
We lay flowers on their graves,
    As we remember them today.

Writing on the Last Sunday in May 2013

It is the last Sunday in May 2013 and I have set my egg or oven timer to fifteen minutes. When the timer alarm sounds I have to finish this entry and post it. I have to limit my writing time to fifteen minute intervals because if I write any longer I have difficulty getting out of the chair.

If I sit down for more then fifteen or twenty minutes at a time the osteoarthritis in my knees gives me pain. The same is true if I stand up for more then fifteen or twenty minutes. This makes doing some jobs around the house difficult, but I am learning to deal with it. I have pain medication, but the medication has side effects that I prefer to avoid so I only take the tablets when it is necessary.

There is an advantage to changing positions and tasks every fifteen minutes. The advantage is I get more exercise. My doctor said I need to get more exercise and lose weight; all though, I am not sure that this is what she meant. I have some minerals that help a litter and I have to purchase more of those next week when my Social Security check hits my bank account. In the mean time, I will handle the situation as best I can.

There is also an advantage to limiting my writing sessions to fifteen minutes at a time. That advantage concerns the writing short stories and flash fiction. Getting away form the project after fifteen minutes helps me focus on the writing and consider what actions the characters take next.

    Cold Coffee on Friday Afternoon

While I was taking my afternoon nap
    my coffee got cold,
    not ice cold,
    but room temperature cold.

    Drinking cold coffee
    on this late Friday afternoon
    reminded me
    of a chilly spring morning
    or fall day.

    Ice coffee
    is a pleasant experience
    on tripe digit summer days,
    but cold coffee
    without chocolate,
    milk,
    or ice
    is a completely different
    experience.

    It isn't
    an unpleasant experience
    and it isn't a pleasant
    either,
    it's just odd,
    perhaps a little
    weird
    and unusual for me,
    but I needed a a subject
    for this poem.

    A Time to Write: Morning

Morning is a time to write
when the dreams of night take flight
into flocks of stanzas and lines,
    into sentences and paragraphs
    that create flocks pages
    and formations of chapters.

    Thursday Morning Coffee

    Sipping
a cup of rich dark coffee
    warmed over in the microwave,
I glance out my living room window
    and witness
    a white butterfly flitting past;
    I wonder
if this is the same butterfly
    I saw yesterday
    as I sipped a cup
    of fresh brewed coffee.

    Mother's Day Visit

I look down at her headstone,
    the stone
red as the rose of love
    engraved on the left side.

This is my first Mother's Day
    without her,
    without my inspiration,
    without my encouragement,
    without my mother.

    I open my prayer book
and read a prayer for the departed
    as I look down
at her last earthly resting place.

    Is insomnia genetic?

    Is insomnia genetic?
Is it an inheritance from my Grandmother?
    I wonder as I contemplate
the hours it takes for me to get to sleep.

    Grandma had difficulty sleeping!
    When she couldn't sleep
    she would clean house
    or play solitaire
    at the kitchen table
    with 52 cards.

    I don't like cleaning house
    in the middle of the night;
I think house cleaning should be done
    in broad daylight
    with all the curtains open.

    When I can't sleep
    I write,
    pray,
    meditate,
    read,
stare out the window into the night,
or play solitaire on my computer.

    Sleep never comes easy
    and sometimes it doesn't come
    at all.

    Midweek Reflections: A Poem

    The week is half over,
    it is Wednesday,
    hump day,
it is time to look back
    across Sunday,
    Monday,
    and Tuesday.

    What did I accomplish
    so far this week?

    What is the left
    to accomplish?

    The week
    and life moves so fast,
    but the days
    extremely slow;
    would it help to write
a list of things to accomplish
    or a list of accomplishment?

    Part of the Equation

It is part of the equation,
giving thanks for what you have,
    for the abundance of joy
carried by the aroma of a clean sheet
    or the feel
of hot soapy water on your hands
as you wash the breakfast dishes.

    Gratitude
    is part of the equation
    of spiritual abundance
    that leads to happiness
    and tranquility.

  • My Cell Phone: A Poem

I left my cell phone in the car
when I returned home last night,
    wearily I prepared for bed,
looking forward to a few hours rest
until I started looking for my cell phone.

    I couldn't find it anywhere,
    it wasn't in my purse
    or on the nightstand,
    but then I remember
I placed it on the front passenger seat.

    I sighed,
    I found the flashlight,
    and then I retrieved my phone;
perhaps I should use an alarm clock
instead of my cell phone alarm.

    May Day,
    the first Day of May
    and the wind is blowing.

    The wind is blowing
    though the neighbors' olive trees,
    oak trees,
    and pine trees,
    while the neighbors' trashcans wait
for the trash trucks to stop beside them,
for the sanitation workers to empty them.

    It is May Day,
perhaps it should be a holiday
    for all workers,
but nothing stops the garbage trucks,
    nothing stops the trash trucks,
    nothings stops the sanitation workers
    from their appointed rounds.

    It is Wednesday,
    the first day of May
    and it is the day
    the trash is picked up
    in this Las Vegas neighborhood.
