The first day of May in Las Vegas

May Day,
the first Day of May
and the wind is blowing.

The wind is blowing
though the neighbors' olive trees,
oak trees,
and pine trees,
while the neighbors' trashcans wait
for the trash trucks to stop beside them,
for the sanitation workers to empty them.

It is May Day,
perhaps it should be a holiday
for all workers,
but nothing stops the garbage trucks,
nothing stops the trash trucks,
nothings stops the sanitation workers
from their appointed rounds.

It is Wednesday,
the first day of May
and it is the day
the trash is picked up
in this Las Vegas neighborhood.

    The Sound of Thunder

    Saturday morning
I hear the sound of thunder
    rolling through my neighborhood.

    Saturday is trash pick-up
from street to street garbage truck move
    obediently stopping at each house.

    Saturday morning
    a partly cloudy sky echoes
    with the sound of thunder.

    Saturday is trash pick-up
    the thundering sound that echoes
    come from the garbage trucks.
