Hot Soup and Hot Sauce

Hot soup
Hot sauce
Cold morning defrost

I don't think its as cold in Las Vegas as in other parts of the country, but it feels cold when you don't have something hot to eat. I made some chicken soup yesterday with garbanzo and sliced potatoes. These foods help keep me warm on cold southern Nevada mornings.I heated the soup up in the microwave and then added hot sauce to it when I dipped it into a cup.

On cold or chilly mornings (depending on my point of view) I like to eat soup out of a cup rather then a bowl. If I put the soup in a cup, I eat it before it gets cold. A cup of soup doesn't fill me up as much as a bowl, which means I have to get up more often, but the soup doesn't get cold in the cup before I finish eating it.

    Haibun-Haiku: Bean Soup Weather

    chill in the night air
    announces winter is here
    this is soup weather

The nights have turned chilly. It is time for soup, so this evening I put red beans in the slow cooker. I will soak the beans over night and in the morning plug the cooker in. While the beans are cooking, I will add the honey baked ham bone I have in the freezer.

When my grandmother made red beans, she always used pigs’ feet or ham hocks to season the beans. I prefer seasoning my beans with honey baked ham because it gives the beans a slightly sweet flavor. I have not decided whether to freeze part of the beans or just eat them for the rest of the week. Since there are only two of us in the house, I should freeze part of the beans; I will make that decision tomorrow.

    Writing about the cold

I am tired of being cold. Never mind that I live in Las Vegas and we have no snow in the valley. It maybe snowing in the mountains surrounding Las Vegas, but there no snow is falling in the Las Vegas valley. I am still cold, the air feels chilly and I am drinking a cup of Hobo soup.

Snow or not I am still cold. I cannot turn the central air unit up enough to keep the house warm because we are lucky to pay the power bill now. I have a sweatshirt on and I am going to put a sweater on under it if the soup does not warm me up.

I am tired of being cold. I want to be warm again. My mother is tired of being cold and she is tired wearing layers of clothing to keep warm. She put three or four blankets on her bed at night. I added two blankets to her bed last night and she removed one. Tonight I am putting that blanket on my bed. Not that it will keep me any warmer.

I turn the central air unit down at night, so that it does not run all night to keep us warm. and run the power bill up. This power bill (due February 6) we can pay, as for the one coming up; I have no idea and I am not going to worry about it. I am tired of being cold. I want to be warm again.

I know that the eastern part of the country has snow and power lines out. I am thankful we do not have snow. I am thankful we still have power. I am thankful that we had leftovers to make Hobo soup. Tomorrow we will have Hobo stew because I found some leftover chicken in the freezer to make the soup into a stew.
