Wednesday Word: Night

Tonight I write about night. I write about the darkness as it spreads across the city and the streetlight come on one by one. I look out my open front door and see the darkness. I look out my window and see the apartment building across the street lit up. The lights only illuminate the front of the building or the upper floors. I cannot see any more then that because it is night.

I hear sirens. I cannot tell if they are police, fire department, or ambulance sirens. All sirens sound alike so if one does not see the vehicle with the sirens one cannot tell which emergency vehicle is speeding down the street. I reread that sentence. I know there must be a grammar error in it, but I am too tired to figure out what it is. I should not type when I cannot think straight, but I am composing this post anyway. My mind is tired while my body is not. Since I will not be able to sleep until later tonight, I type about night.

Night in the city is interesting. The noises arouse my curiosity, but it would be foolish to investigate because it is dangerous out there. Since I cannot identify some of the noises my imagination works overtime, which is good for a writer. I do not have to leave the house to find something to write about because my imagination can find plenty of stuff by just listening to the noises.

Maybe that is why I like the city at night. There are so many weird and unusual noises I would not hear in the country. Night in the country generates different noises then night in the city. I will post this and then I will close my door because it is night outside and it is time to close the door.

    Writing about night and darkness

    It is night, not dark because I live in Las Vegas. It is seldom dark in Las Vegas or any other city. Sometimes the lights go out because of a power failure, but that does not last long. The streets are lit, perhaps not as well lit, as some would like, but there are always streetlights.

    In the modern world, darkness is rare even at night. I live in an area where I can look up and see a few stars. Sometimes I see Venus shining in the evening sky, especially when it is high above the horizon. Sometimes I look straight up and see stars twinkling.

    There are always lights on in my house and around the house. It is dangerous to have complete darkness because it attracts intruders. It attracts unwanted guest who enter without knocking on the door and take whatever valuables they can find.

    Darkness is not safe. There is safety in well-lit areas because a person can see all around and knows what is happening, but you never know what is going on in the dark.

    Darkness if fear because you hear noises, but you do not know who or what is making those noises. We fear the unknown in the dark. We fear the unwanted intruder in the dark.

    The night sky is beautiful because of the starlight. Humanity finds the light of the stars beautiful and not the darkness that surrounds them.

    Write about Masks

    7 Masa'il 164 B.E. - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 about 1:45 PM PST

    Daily Writing Practice Prompt for December 18, 2007 - Write about Masks.

    The mask of night hides
    the beauty revealed by dawn's first light,
    while the mask of day
    conceals the rainbow hues of distant stars.

    The masks of civilization
    hides the primitive individual
    that dwells within the human being.

    We all wear mask to conceal
    our true selves,
    we wear masks because we fear;
    we wear masks to hide our differences
    or the conceal our sameness;
    we wear masks and fear the masks removal.

    NOTE: This is as far as I've gotten on this poem and I'm still not sure of a working title.
