Each day is a new beginning.
Each day is a new chance to improve.
Each dawn brings tests and difficulties.
Each dawn brings blessings and gifts.
Each day a person lives is another chance to achieve and succeed.
Each individual must define success for him or herself.
Each day is a chance to say I love you to someone.
Each day is a chance to transform.
Each day can be better then yesterday.
Each individual must make today better then yesterday.
Each day an individual has a choice between happiness and sadness.
Each day a writer has a chance to write a new poem or story.
Each day a writer has a chance to get outside of his or her box.
Each day an individual has a chance to say thank you to someone.
Each day an individual has a chance to make a new beginning.

A Ten day Week Would be Too Long

We owe the Babylonians a great big thank you that we have a seven-day week rather then a ten-day week. The Babylonians were enthusiastic astronomers, who based the majority of their mathematical systems on the movement of the stars and other heavenly bodies. The first division of time was the day followed by the month.

The reason the month, and not the week, came next was because of the moon. A month can be tracked by the cycle of the moon, which is twenty-nine and a half days. This creates a problem because there is no even division of days into a twenty-nine and one-half day month. Four comes closest to an even division, however the Babylonians decided on seven and the number of days in a week.

Other cultures came up with other number for the division of a week, but seven and ten were the most popular. Because of various other factors the seven-day week became the most popular and is the one used today. At present, people normally work either five or six days a week and take one or two day off, usually on the weekends. We set our weekly schedule and goals to a seven-day week and most of our activities revolve around a seven-day week.

Can you imagine, what it would be like if a ten-day week had become popular? We would work eight or nine days and get only one or two days off. We would plan our schedules and weekly goals on ten days instead of seven; talk about a long week. By the time the weekend or our days off came around, we would not want to go back to work on Monday and the weekend would really be too short.

Daily Writing Practice Prompt for December 18, 2007 - Write about Masks.

The mask of night hides
the beauty revealed by dawn's first light,
while the mask of day
conceals the rainbow hues of distant stars.

The masks of civilization
hides the primitive individual
that dwells within the human being.

We all wear mask to conceal
our true selves,
we wear masks because we fear;
we wear masks to hide our differences
or the conceal our sameness;
we wear masks and fear the masks removal.

NOTE: This is as far as I've gotten on this poem and I'm still not sure of a working title.

A Windy Solar Day

8 'Ilm 164 B.E. - Monday, October 22, 2007 about 9:57 PM PDT

This morning I went onto the patio and found everything in scattered. It's a good thing my patio is enclosed because otherwise the stuff would be scattered across my backyard and the neighbors' yards. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a windy day now and then, but we've gotten some "Reno Zephyrs" lately. Although since this is Las Vegas maybe I should call them Las Vegas Zephyrs (sorry Mr. Twain).

Reno Zephyrs

Mark Twain described "Reno Zephyrs" in one of his book. They aren't quite the Santa Anna's, but they're close. We get them here in Las Vegas this time of year. They are a poet's dream muse because one can use them to describe anything from a torrid love affair to wild party.

A Windy Solar Day

Nice title isn't it. I think it will make a great title for either a poem or a piece of flash fiction. I haven't decided which yet. Sometimes I get the title to a piece before anything else. Sometimes I find a character and then look for a story. Sometimes the plot and a plot point generates a story. This title looks like either a science fiction piece or a spiritual piece.
