Friday Question of the Day: Do you have friggatriskaidekaphobia?

This was a bonus question posted on one of the blogging groups on writing.com. Since I responded to today's prompt and  posted it on the group forum page, I decided to use this as today's topic. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is one of the words for fear of Friday the Thirteenth. The two other words are triskaidekaphobia and paraskevidekatriaphobia.

Since  Friday the Thirteenth has three different words for its phobia it must be a frightening day or the fear must cross language and cultural barriers. The three names for this fear are derived from three different languages and cultures, so people across the planet must be afraid of Friday the Thirteenth. Are you one of those who is afraid to leave the house on this day?

Am I afraid of Friday the Thirteenth? Do I suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia,  triskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia? No! True the only time I will leave the house is to go for a walk and pick up  the mail, but that is because I have no plans for going any place today. This is the second Friday in May so I have to stay in my apartment to wait for the exterminator.  He is scheduled to come this afternoon, however, sometimes his schedule changes and he arrive in the morning.

If you do suffer from fear of Friday the Thirteenth and have to leave the house in order to go to work then I suggest you say a prayer of protection before you back out of your driveway. If you do not want to say a prayer of protection I would suggest wearing your lucky socks, underwear or some other piece of lucky clothing.  Have a happy and safe Friday the Thirteenth and be especially careful of talking or texting on your smartphone while you are driving.

Form Friday: Free Verse Poem - Random Thoughts on Friday the Thirteenth

    Listen to the birds
the sing joyful notes of praise
    on Friday
    or any other day.

    They don't let worries
    bother about
    monetary issues
    bother them.

    They have problems
    that are natural,
    simple,
    and solvable.

    They have to watch
    for the neighborhood cats,
find food in a desert city,
look for water on hot or cool days,

    This is Friday the Thirteenth
    and I worry,
    but not about
    good or bad luck
    because luck
    and coincidence
    are two sides
    of the same coin.

    I worry
    about finances,
about getting money in the bank
    by Monday;
    I stop,
    I say a prayer,
    I work online
    knowing that no matter
how much I make this weekend
it will not get into the bank
    before Tuesday,
    Wednesday,
    or Thursday
and it needs to be there
    on Monday.

    I will not give up
    not matter how impossible
    the problem I face
    because
    miracles happen
    and working on something
    alleviate worry energy
    that prevents me
    from finding a solution.

    Frightening Friday in Las Vegas

It is Friday, July 13, 2012, and it is supposed to be bad luck. It is the end of a workweek and the beginning of the weekend. It is Mom’s last day at the daycare center until Monday. I am staying home today, but not because Friday the Thirteenth is bad luck.

I am staying home because I am behind on housework (a normal condition) and writing assignments. I have to complete all of the writing before Monday; therefore, I expect to be up most of Friday and Saturday night. I might as well be working on something because I do not sleep very well any more. Keeping an ear out for Mom crying about something prevents a good night’s sleep.

The beginning of the week and the beginning of the month

    The first of July
    Another coincidence
    A new week begins

An interest fact about months that begin on Sunday ~ every month that begins on a Sunday has a Friday the thirteenth.

    Beautiful Sunday
    New beginning and new start
    It is a good day

The first thing I need to do is play my Independence Day menu. Mom will be home that day, so I think we will have a traditional Fourth of July meal. I am planning to purchase hotdogs and hotdog buns, with sweet relish and mustard. I also plan to purchase a watermelon because when I was a child we always had a cold watermelon on Independence Day. I think I also want a cherry pie and potato salad.

    July holidays
    Independence Day fireworks
    We plan to stay home

I think I will purchase an individual seedless watermelon. This type of melon is big enough for Mom and I to share without having any leftovers. I don’t mind having leftover hotdogs or hotdog buns, but I do not have room in the refrigerator for a huge watermelon. In addition, I do not want to freeze leftover watermelon, so Mom and I will each have half an individual watermelon for the Fourth of July.

    Buy a cherry pie
    Good memories from my childhood
    Vanilla ice cream

    Fear of Friday the Thirteenth

It is Friday, April 13, 2012. Friday the thirteenth, for anyone with friggatriskaidekaphobia, is dreaded day of the year because it bodes bad luck. Friggatriskaidekaphobia, is fear of Friday the Thirteenth, I comes from a combination of the name Frigga, the Norse goddess after which Friday is named, and triskaidekaphobia, fear of thirteen.

Another word fear of this day is paraskevidekatriaphobia, which is a combination of two Greek words. The first is Paraskevi, which means Friday, and the second is dekatreis, for thirteen. The phobia in both friggatriskaidekaphobia and paraskevidekatriaphobia means fear.

One of the intriguing facts about 2012 is three occurrences of Friday the Thirteenth. Those “fearful” days fall on January 13, April 13, and July 13. Another interesting fact about Friday the Thirteenth is that it always falls in months that begin with a Sunday.

A month that begins on Sunday

Today is Sunday, August 1, and August is a month with a Friday the 13th. Every month that begins on a Sunday has a Friday the 13th. As far as I can tell, Friday the 13th is just as lucky or unlucky as any other day of the week or the month.

If a person wakes up feeling lucky then the person will be lucky because he or she looks for good luck and seeks positive experiences. On the other hand, if a person feels unlucky then negative experiences are encountered because that is all the person is able to see. Positive expectations attract positive experiences and help negate negative experiences.

Life is full of both positive and negative experience. Life is full of lucky situations and unlucky situations. The way a person handles each of these situations and experiences depend on the person and his or her expectations. If an individual expects the majority of his or her experiences to be positive or lucky then that is what happens. So this Friday the 13th let us try an experiment and wake up expecting to encounter good luck.

    Happy Blame Somebody Else Day

This is the first Friday the Thirteenth in 2009, so it is Blame Somebody Else Day. No one in the world has to take responsibility for anything that happens to him or her. Today you can blame somebody else for your problems or anything that happens to you, without feeling guilty.

No one is sure who came up with this day, but it's probably somebody else's fault. After all, it's blame somebody else day so you can blame it on somebody else. Remember, this is Friday, February 13, 2009, it's the first Friday the Thirteenth of 2009, and it's blame somebody else day.

2009 has three Friday the Thirteenths

The first Friday the Thirteenth of 2009 is in February. The first day of February falls on a Sunday. When a month begins on a Sunday then it has a Friday the Thirteenth. I still don't see why thirteen or Friday is unlucky either separately or together.

The idea that a day of the week or a number can be unlucky intrigues the writer in me. The reason for Friday the Thirteenth being unlucky calls for a little bit of research. What I do know is that the numeric root of thirteen if four, which isn't unlucky in itself. However, thirteen is considered unlucky, while the one and the three, which make up the thirteen are consider lucky numbers because they are odd numbers.
