March Holidays 2014

Saturday, March 8 - International Women's Day
Sunday, March 9 - Daylight Savings Time begins
Thursday, March 13 - World Kidney Day
Thursday, March 20 - Spring begins in the northern hemisphere
Friday, March 21 - Naw-Ruz
Sunday, March 30 - National Doctors' Day

Those are all the March holidays that I am interested in right now. I have not checked the unusual or weird holidays that fall in March because that is a different post. I will write something for each of these days and post it either in this blog or in Poet 999 - A Butterfly Emerges from Her Cocoon.

February Holidays

February has some interesting holidays. Of course, there are the holidays that everyone knows about and celebrates such as Ground Hog Day, February 2, Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12, Valentine’s Day, February 14, and George Washington’s Birthday, February 22. However, these are not the only holidays in February.

Besides several unique and bizarre holidays in the upcoming month, there is a day of remembrance. February 3, is day of remembrance for Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. This is The Day the Music Died in 1959; the day that the three rock singers died in a plane crash.

Some of more interesting and bizarre holidays in February are Create a Vacuum Day, February 4, Get a Different Name Day, February 13, Do a Grouch a Favor Day, February 16, and Public Sleeping Day, February 28. While some of the delicious holidays in February are Plum Pudding Day, February 12, National Gum Drop Day, February 15, National Chocolate Mint Day, February 19, Cherry Pie Day, February 20, National Tortilla Chip Day, February 24, and National Pistachio Day, February 26.

The one day we do not want to forget is Random Acts of Kindness Day, February 17. This is the day set aside for us to perform one or more Random Acts of Kindness. So place this date on your calendar and perform a random act of kindness.

Happy Cyber Monday

It's the first Monday after Thanksgiving, which is Cyber Monday. According to all the ads, everyone is shopping online today. All right, not everyone because I'm not shopping online. The extent of my holiday shopping is sending holiday cards to family and friends.

I'll send each of my brothers, sister, and friends a card commemorating the holiday they are celebrating. Most of the cards will be e-cards, except for my sister who doesn't have an e-mail address. I'll send her card snail mail.

In keeping with the season, I'm going to close by wishing everyone a Happy Holiday or a Happy Christmas. May you receive a special gift this season.

Happy Skyscraper Day

September 3 is Skyscraper Day, which is only one of about thirty Bizarre September Holidays. I am not sure how a person is supposed to celebrate Skyscraper Day. Maybe find the tallest building in town, go to the top of it and look out over the city.

I am not sure which hotel-casino in Las Vegas has the tallest or highest tower. I know it is one of the hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Therefore, instead of celebrating Skyscraper Day by going to the tallest building in town, I will write a poem.

Monday is Clean out your computer day

Monday, February 9, is the second Monday of the month, which is Clean Out Your Computer Day. This is the day everyone is supposed to go through their computer files and programs then delete any that are no longer of any use.

All writers should commemorate this day by cleaning out their computer. It is easy enough to do you just buy a huge batch of blank CDs. Next, you go through the files on your computer and determine which files are useless junk and which contain story related pieces of information. Now comes the hard part, deciding which files you do not need for stories you are now working on.

Now transfer all the story related files you that are not needed for present projects to a blank CD. Label the CD and put it in a safe place. Now you are ready to burn back-up CDs for anything you are working on.

This is going to take a bit of time. I know that I am going to need several months of working only the second Monday of the month to completely clear the old files off my computer and burn back-up CDs for everything.

Have fun on Monday and clean out your computer. While you are at it send your boss and all your co-workers an e-card that says "Happy Clean Out your Computer Day". If yo cannot find a card with that specific message then create your own message using a blank e-card, after all you are a writer and creating your own verses for e-cards is much more fun the using a card written by someone else.

Writing about the Fourth of July

I have come up with several ideas for my Fourth of July blog entry. Most of the ideas have to do with childhood memories and the Fourth of July. When I grew up in Blackwell, Oklahoma, my grandfather always took us to a recreational area for The Fourth. I remember going to Lake Blackwell (I think that was the name of the lake outside of Blackwell) and Lake Carl Blackwell. Those were fun trips, my grandparents enjoyed the way we kids reacted to the pyrotechnic displays.

I am not going anyplace for The Fourth, again this year. From where we live we can see the beautiful displays the hotel casinos put on. There is not any reason to leave the house on the Fourth of July. Some of the neighbors (especially those with kids) put on fireworks displays of their own.
