Tuesday Topics: May Day
May Day has a long and varied history. According to History and Origin, on May 1 the Druids held “the festival of Beltane”, because it was thought that May 1 divided the year in half.
According to the article May Day is not about maypoles: the history of international workers' day, May Day also has it roots in the struggle for an eight-hour workday.
Until I started searching for information on this holiday, I did not know much about its history May Day. I remember that as a child, we had a spring pageant in which we danced around a maypole. That was a long time ago, so I am not sure who held the pageant. It could have been by my grade school or at the church we attended. The reason I remember the pageant was the maypole.
