What does the file extension mean?

Do you know what the file extension part of a file name means? I used to know the definition of every file extension, but not any more. There are over 1,000 file extensions used today. I have no idea what most of them mean, that is why file-extension-library.com is so helpful. This web site defines those extensions and gives the applications that use them. It also tells whether you can open those applications in Windows.

There is one page on this website that I am going to find extremely helpful. It is the file extension cfg, which gives information on configurations files and how to fix configuration errors. This part of the website tells why a cfg (configuration) file will not open in Windows, which results when there is a registry error or you do not have the application installed. You can access a free scan to fix registry errors from this page.
