The edges on the coffee can

The on the inside edge of modern coffee cans is a small rim. This tiny shelf or rim prevents a coffee drinker from getting all the fresh grounds out of the can. No matter how hard you try, there is always a small amount of unused grounds left in the can. I noticed this several years ago, but this morning it suddenly became wasteful.

I remember Grandpa Newland opening a can of coffee with a can opener. There was never a small rim left to hold any of the grounds in the can. When he could no longer use the coffee measuring scoop to get the ground coffee out of the can, he just tipped the can and the remaining ground came out onto a saucer.

Most modern coffee cans open differently. All a coffee drinker has to do is pull a tab to open the can, with a small ridge that prevents a person from getting all the fresh grounds out of the can. The plastic coffee containers are easier to get all coffee out, but coffee in those containers is more expensive. I think I am going to change from cans to plastic containers because of the waste issue and the containers can be used to store other things when they are empty.
