Write about a conversation.

Daily Writing Practice Prompt for Friday, July 24, 2009: “Write about a conversation.”

Writers need to know how to write conversation, which sounds authentic. Even if you write fantasy or science fiction the conversation has to sound real within the context of the story. Another things writers have to watch out for is redundancy when characters speak to each other.

There is an exercise that helps writers write conversation. On of them is to write the discussion between two characters using only the conversation itself, no explanation and no words out side the quotation marks.

This exercise goes something like this:

"What's that you have in your hand?"

"The gem of immortality!"

"Really, Joy? It looks like an ordinary green crystal to me."

"Well, Sam, it isn't! It's the emerald of eternal life and owning it gives me immortality."
